New Motor Overheating
OK 255 c.i. blower motor, 4" stroke, boiled block, new water pumps, electric fan, radiator is stock and hot tanked. 170* t-stats, 50/50 propylene glycol/ water mix. Trying 10* advanced right now at idle with normal to rich A/F reading. Temp goes past 210 so I shut it off after a 3 minute run around the block. Electric fan was on the entire time. Water coming out of the overflow, but I don't know if it's boiling over or just finding it's proper height. Edelbrock aluminum heads were torqued 3 times so far to 55lbs. I do have about 6 head studs leaking coolant right now so I don't know if that's a factor or not. I pulled the plugs and none look steam cleaned.
I know new motors are tight and that can cause heat until they loosen up. I'm just afraid to take it past 220 or more and end up with a bigger problem. I'm all ears |

Once around the block is not a fair test. I would suggest that you repeatedly run the engine under some load. Take a few quick runs through the gears as you go around the block. You can do a cool down rest in between. Putting some load on the engine will seat the rings and you may find that the heating issue goes away.

That did to help! I didn’t go too far but definitely mashed it a bit and it hovered just under 210* even after I let it idle for a few minutes! Thank you!

Keep at it. I had a fresh rebuild in a '67 Corvette that wouldn't idle for any length of time without overheating. At a little less than 2000 miles, just when I was steeling myself to dig into it, it miraculously healed itself. I have had no overheating problems in the 10 plus years since.

I have a 8BA very similar to yours, blower and all but 286". I have a 4 row aluminum rad which never has a problem cooling the motor. I am running 6 d initial, 26 d total but have a boost retard system which will reduce 1 to 3 degrees of boost for every pound. I usually have it set on 2d per lb of boost. At 5 lb that reduces my timing to 16d, safe for a blower motor. I think your stock rad does not have enough capacity to cool your motor. The blower in my case (B&M 142) does require more power to turn and does produce heat.
I don't think break in will help too much. I also have a 2500 cfm electric fan which rarely comes on, only in very slow traffic. Best of luck, you'll love the boost! |

Pressure test that system and see if it holds pressure or leaks. If so, where? Run less anti freeze. Anti freeze runs hotter than water although it raises the boiling temperature. For these tests, run 75% distilled water and 25% anti freeze. Pull oil drain plug and check for presence of coolant.

It actually idled in my driveway for 15 minutes just under 210* I have your L100B cam in this block and it sounds friggin nasty! I'm tuning by laptop with a Mallory Unilte distributor and a CB performance black box. I've gone the centrifugal route, but with a blower, it's much easier to pinpoint timing throughout the entire curve and more importantly pull out timing when under boost. Thanks! |

My blower motor has never got over 190, even idling in traffic so I'm sure I probably have more cooling than what I need. I'm currently doing another blower motor for my '33 roadster and will try a stock, good rad. Hope it works. If not I will buy a stock, 4 row rad.

put two bottles of "water wetter" in with the 50/50 cooled my 51 Merc about 15 degrees
