Default '47 Fordor Clutch Replacement Success

Just wanted to report my experience on replacing the clutch in my '47 fordor. My brother and I pulled the rearend back, dropped the pan and pulled the transmission out. Neither of us had ever done this before so we did lots of research on the ford barn and the internet. I also corresponded with Old Henry, who provided much information.

I had the flywheel machined and got the clutch assembly from Ft. Wayne, of which I highly recommend. They are fast shippers and the parts I got were of high quality.

This morning we fired her up and took off. It was very smooth taking off and shifting through the gears. It had a terrible shudder before. This was not an easy project by any means, but proved to be a self rewarding experience for the two of us. Just want to thank the ford barn, Old Henry and all who helped along the way.

Danny

I am interested to know if you replaced any of the clutch linkage parts while you were down. I adjusted my clutch awhile back and noticed the clevice and rod are worn along with the shift linkage. I have seen somewhere the clutch pedal return spring is supposed to attach to a clip on a pan bolt. Is that right?

Congratulations on a job well done.

Thanks Darrell. I had to replace the clutch linkage bushing. Its a small bronze bushing that is in two pieces. We found one half to be broken when we took it loose. My transmission casing has a step with a hole where the spring attaches. The spring went from there to the shifter linkage. There are two linkages side by side and it goes to the one towards the outside of the car. You can see where it attaches best from underneath the car. Hope this helps.

Also, thanks Ford Freak. Forgot to mention that.

Not sure if this worked or not. This picture shows the spring that I believe you are talking about.
