Pistons before valves
Is there any particular reason to install the valve train before pistons? Only reason I ask is that I have valve parts on order and have the pistons ready to go in.
Thanks Paul |

Re: Pistons before valves
Easier to slide cam in, steadying it from underneath, if the crank is not in the way.

Re: Pistons before valves
Easier to set the valve clearance when turning the engine over with just the crank in without the rods and pistons. Put them in after you set the valves.

Re: Pistons before valves
Doesn't make any real difference - just a personal preference. As Deuce says, it is a lot easier adjusting valves (assuming you have adjustable lifters) - when you don't have the drag of the pistons/rings involved, but not a big deal either way. If you have everything for the lower end and you're itching to get it done . . . by all means, get after it!
