Default Re: Question on engine parts interchangeability

The cam bearings I ordered were standard size (both times). The rings I ordered were for 0.030 over 3 3/16. Filing rings to fit is not uncommon in an engine assembly, but I've never been told not to do it.

No reason you should feel bad. I've messed with old cars enough to expect a learning curve. I just appreciate having this group to ask questions of.

After looking further I believe the oil rings were 3/16 in the 8BA, but 5/32 in the 59AB. The rings I bought clearly state for 39-48 in the catalog, but apparently I got later ones anyway. It looks like the parts supplier sabotaged me with both the rings and cam bearings.

Could my piston grooves be machined to 3/16" width? I still don't know why moly rings cannot be filed to correct the end gap.

I don't believe I have the "green bible". I have 39-48 Service Manual and probably a dozen other books and manuals. I haven't run across the difference in rings. I guess this is one way to learn.
