Default Can a cracked block be fixed?

So this’s morning I pulled the left head from a ‘46 Mercury.
It is badly warped but the lock has a crack from the intake seat to the cylinder.
And the sleeve has moved up some. Should a 46 Merk have sleeves?
Can the crack be fixed? Will lt be reliable?

Stitching and a sleeve is the usual fix for it.
As long as you can drill the end of the crack down in the valvebowl it´s repairable.

A '46 would not have sleeves originally so it's been repaired previously. The sleeve that's moved will have to come out before inspecting the block for extent of crack and possible repair. As Murre says, getting to the ends of the crack is important.

I had a 59 block sleeved to take care of a tiny pinhole leak in the cylinder wall below to piston travel area. The shop that sleeved it use some type adhesive product like Locktite between the cylinder wall and sleeve to ensure the sleeve didn't move. If you need the name of the peoduct I can get for you form the machine shop. As pointed out, usually pinning, (stitching), will solve most crack problems. On the East cost we have a wizard, (Frank Casey), that has been doing for years.

Some folks use JB Weld to seal a sleeve. There are other products as well. If the cylinder wall had a hole or crack in it then that may be part of where the leak is coming from. Folks have been pinning blocks with cast iron pins for years but it's one of those things that has a learning curve to it. That sleeve shouldn't have come loose whether it was sealed or not so it really should be replaced with a tighter fitting part.
