Default 29 coupe running boards

So looking at my running boards, the outside edge has the same cross section configuration as the zinc or stainless strip trim piece, as if there was never intended to be a trim piece installed. anyone seen this on a runningboard before? Is it old or new or just some weird item from the sixties.

Original boards are made that way.
Most of the repro boards cheap out and just have a flat outer edge lip.
