Sludge build up
I removed my manifold the other day on a 41 block. The lifter valley has a lot of sludge build up. I know the oil pan has the same problem. When I first got the car, it would smoke pretty bad once it got warmed up. Could this build up be the cause of the smoking, or give the impression of blow-by?

Re: Sludge build up
No, blow-by would not be affected or caused by the sludge buildup

Re: Sludge build up
The oil is constantly being contaminated from variouse sources. Getting the oil hot removes some of these. Frequent starts and stops and driving short distances does not allow the oil to get up to operating temperature and the result is the sludge build up. Higher operating temperature, driving longer distances and frequent oil changes can help prevent a lot of it. A PCV can also help a lot, but that is something not everyone wants to install!
