Default Tillotson Carb Idle

Earlier today I "rebuilt" a Tilly 'X' carb.
Installed on car and started it up.
From start up thru warm up, and after, I could not adjust the semi fast idle down at all.
All parts are connected properly.
Retarding spark all the way caused idle to slow and car started to stall out.

Suggestions/recommendations requested. Thanks!

Sounds like the float level may not be adjusted correctly.

just a guess is it possible the throttle plate could be on upside down... on many carbs they are chamfered..
do you have the base idle screw backed all the way out? try disconnecting the throttle linkage also??
vacuum leak...

My bet would be the throttle plate.

What do you mean by rebuilt? Did you take out all the plugs and make sure the passages weren't plugged? Idle passages are small.

They are much easier to rebuild than a zenith.

Love my Tilly, works great.
Did it do any of that before the re-build?

Take it off, take it apart, take your time.
Clean every passage, adjust the float, and put it back together slowly.
Back the GAV out 1/2 way "before" you seat it.

Back off the idle speed screw, and make sure the throttle plate closes completely. If it doesn't, then loosen the two plate screws and shift the plate and shaft so the plate is fully closed, then tighten the screws.

I did not remove the plugs.
Disassembled as much as possible.
Soaked all in carb cleaner.
Cleaned parts and either replaced or reinstalled.
I'm quite sure I installed new main jet. They are a bear to remove.
I think I bought it as a "rebuilt."
I will redo as suggested next week.
Today I built another, from 2, and it runs great......so far.
I will give update soon.
Thank you as always!

Since all passageways have an in & out side, make sure to blowcompressed air both ways to clean out.

What Tom W says and there are 2 air bleeds in the venturi that need to be really really clean.

Interesting thread. I am looking for specs on the jets. Any help would be appreciated.
I have a couple I would like to rebuild.

Steve Pargetter has a great booklet on rebuilding carbs. Not too much money, and well worth having even if you don't have a carb to do.

No specs on the jets like a zenith. Only trick is to take out the 3 lead plugs and one welch plug to clear out passages. Main jet can be difficult to remove about half the time.
