Default Can I remove bonded lining from brake shoes?

I have hard bonded lining on the brake shoes of my '32 5 Window with mechanical brakes. No surprise, the car barely stops. I want to replace the lining with the woven type. The question is, how do I remove the glued on hard lining, or can I ? I am thinking of throwing them in a charcoal fire until the glue softens. Will this work? Any other ideas. ?? I would appreciate any comments or suggestions. Jim in San Jose

Just have a good brake shop do your shoes and arc them to the drums. It really isn't that expensive.

heat the glue with a propane torch and you can scrape them off the metal backing. There can be a bit of smoke so do it outdoors.

I removed the lining accidentally from my 39 deluxe while trying to pull one of those stubborn rear brake drums. The drum was so ridged that it pulled the lining off the shoe in one piece which I could hardly believe. Guess I need some "gorilla glue" to stick it back together. :-)

Depending on how long ago the shoes were replaced could be a problem. I was just
looking at info that said asbestos was still being used in brake pad manufacturing through
the 1990's and probably longer. Be careful and do some detective work.

Thanks everybody for your suggestions. I have ordered a complete set of woven lining and a Friction Materials retail store here in San Jose. I think I will let them deal with removing the bonded lining and riveting on the new woven lining. Thanks again. Jim

The last time I checked (about 2 years ago) it was over $17 PER shoe to remove the bonded linings. This was at a place that does this kind of work not a small Mom Pop operation.
