Default '38 pickup hood latch

I have a '38 tonner which I suspect has the same hood latch as the 1/2 ton. I finally have the hood ready to reinstall, and I have a question about the latch. I have all of the pieces of the latch (I'm assuming) and pictures of how they were when I took them apart. However, I'm wondering if there is any sort of spring in the assembly. I didn't see one. Also, if anyone has a picture of the inner workings (which are difficult to see), that would be helpful in confirming what I'm working with. Thanks...

I know I struggled to remember how mine went together after a year or so. They are actually pretty simple. Here are a couple of photos that may help. There is indeed a spring required. The spring holds down the latch plate so the handle will not turn to the locked position unless the latch plate is compressed by the latch post. Nice safety feature.

The pictures are indeed helpful. They clarify the installation since mine was functional but apparently not aligned correctly according to what you have here. My uncertainty was about those "dog ears" and what the holes in them were for. I can see clearly in your 1st photo that they were supposed to go through the hood plate and be secured with cotter pins. Thank you.

This thread is for the 39 1/2 ton hood latch. It has a photo that may help you determine if the 38 tonner is the same

Thanks a bunch. The description you referenced is great and the pictures are very helpful, especially the one of the pieces separated. It's obvious from that picture that the spring that I have is broken and only about half of what is needed for the latch to function correctly. I'll need to replace that before assembling the latch. My latch is not exactly the same but very similar.
