'33 Pickup, firewall detail question.
I have two 1933 truck cabs, Lets call one the meat truck and the other the pickup. Both cabs were completely disassembled and all the hardware labeled and bagged. I went to put my new reproduction cowl lace on, there was a bag that said, "cowl lace" and contained a bunch of little screws. I look at the pickup cowl and there are no holes for screws, hmmm.
I look at the meat truck cowl and there is a line of holes that screws go in. I really compare the two and notice that my pickup cowl has a raised bead, and the meat truck doesn't. So I start looking all over the internet, and all the 33 trucks I see have a smooth area, and use screws to hold the lacing on. Has anybody noticed this and possibly know why the pickup is different than all the others i've seen? Maybe It's a Canadian thing? I'm not sure the origin of the meat truck, it was a BB, but my pickup was definitely Canadian built. Also had a Canadian front axle in it, and Serial# Here are pictures to compare. Thanks for any input. If anyone is interested in my '33 build, you can see it here http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/t...-story.998700/ Merry Christmas everyone! |

Re: '33 Pickup, firewall detail question.
Are there small slots on each side of the hood hinge bracket?

The pickup cowl has one slot on each side of the hood hinge bracket, the meat truck has a screw on each side.

Re: '33 Pickup, firewall detail question.
The pickup used the type of lacing attachment used on all '32s, namely with clips riveted to each end of each piece of cowl lacing with tabs on the ends of the clips that fit into the slots in the cowl. Those clips are available as reproductions, but usually just in kits for '32s. Perhaps someone will sell you just the clips.

It came with the clips to rivet on, as well I have the old ones here too. Just thought it was an interesting difference, and wondered why it may have been that way. FlatheadTed, That is interesting, It makes me more curious about it now. |

Re: '33 Pickup, firewall detail question.
Running changes of that sort were and remain standard practice in the automotive business. The motives are many and include better durability, mistake correction, and cost reduction. Both the '32 and '33 model years including many major changes apart from minor ones such as in this case. The '34 model year was in contrast relatively "quiet" with regard to the number and scope of running changes.

I think the truck lacing followed the car type of that year ,eg 33 /34 a round one for the cowl ,rather than flat with two round edges that 32 had ,and was used on the 33/34 grill .Ted

Re: '33 Pickup, firewall detail question.
The cross section of both the cowl and radiator shell lace originally used on all '32 models was oval shaped, not round nor dumbbell shaped.

Re: '33 Pickup, firewall detail question.
I wouldn't worry too much about flattening the reproduction lacing. The original had a hard core whereas the reproductions have a soft core which means that the weight of the hood plus the downward pressure exerted by the four spring-loaded latches will flatten the lacing sooner than you'd likely prefer ultimately resulting in a mismatch of the raised moldings of the hood top panels and cowl.
