Default 12 Volt coil

Picked up a 38 Deluxe a couple weeks ago w/a coil adapter plate on the helmet dist. I need to replace the coil on it & while scratching around 40yrs. of my stuff looking for the 6v coil I know I have all I can find is the 12v one from my 57. Wired it up (like a 12v sys.) & it fired right up. Question is can I run it with this coil? If so how should it be wired + or - to dist. the car is still a 6v sys. The 12v coil has 1.5 ohms resistance primary & 9k secondary. Should I run the cars resistor under the dash in the circuit with the 12v coil? I ran a search and while there was a wealth of info I didn't see anything specific. I'm more than a bit rusty on 6v systems.

Please post the answer you found. I am also intrigued because the mechanic who did my engine was testing it with a 12v coil. What will happen if I leave the 12v coil on the 6 v system?

It will run, maybe last a long time.
Check voltage to the points, should be 4.5 volts or so.
