Cleaning a crudy Oil filler pipe assembly
Besides soaking in gas and trying to clean what you can from the inside of the tube, what are some ways to get those baffles clean that one can not get to with in the tube itself? Boiling it in a good soapy solution???
Thanks. Pluck |

Caustic soda (lye) will work.

In the Model "A" and Model "B" oil breather pipes, the baffles are a separate sheet metal stampings and can be pulled out for cleaning.

I burn the hydrocarbons out with a torch. it makes cleaning faster. I do the same with rear axle housings before I have them blasted.

Re: Cleaning a crudy Oil filler pipe assembly
Thanks guys...I think I will do as John suggests then put them in Evaporust to really clean them.
Bob...I was under the impression that the baffle assembly was spot welded into the tube??? Pluck |

Evporust only works on Rust, does not clean oil/grease/etc.

Have it hot tanked. Grease and oil will kill Evaporust, it is right on the package.

Re: Cleaning a crudy Oil filler pipe assembly
If you're brave enough, put it in the dishwasher. If you like living, your idea about boiling in soapy water is good or washing in petrol or similar solvent (Kerosene?) mighty work or even, as has been suggested, some sodium hydroxide (NaOH) That will take off any paint too.

Steve: Never soak anything in gasoline. Very dangerous FUMES can cause a disaster. including you. Have a deceased friend somewhere between Heaven and Hell, hopefully Heaven who was soaking paint brushes in gasoline. Nuff said. Jim...

Put it in a small container and spray it liberally with oven cleaner. Rinse and repeat. Do it outside. That stuff stinks and the fumes are nasty. The stuff at the dollar store works fine.

Re: Cleaning a crudy Oil filler pipe assembly
I do not think glass beading is a good idea. There are a lot if hidden places around baffle and glad beads get stuck in cracks and crevices.

Re: Cleaning a crudy Oil filler pipe assembly
Agreed. Furthermore, to blast old grease off with beadblasting is a waste of time and resources.

Power Washing at a car wash? Would have to clamp it in something to hold it.
