Steering box oil
How much is OK?
I rebuilt the steering box in my 31 and filled it to the top with heavy oil. The bottom seal has the extended tube and I replaced the seal on the thingy with two teeth. It is leaving a puddle of oil on the floor. I am thinking that I overfilled it. In any case it is now better than when it didn’t have any oil. How full should it be? |

Re: Steering box oil
Some steering boxes just seem to leak.
I use John Deere Cornhead grease. No leaks, and I fill it right up. Enjoy. |

Re: Steering box oil
The 2 tooth box only takes a couple ounces. So, no biggie, it'll seek its level.

Re: Steering box oil
600 W or something of similar weight, filled to the top! And if it is leaking, there is a gasket or seal or something, not right here. There is a rebuild PDF file that may help.
It is titled Two Tooth Steering Basics Simple once known Printable Version by Paul Modlin and Mishawaka High School students: Tim Glasco, Bradley Howe, and Christian Mestach Also, if it leaking as much as you say, crawling under the car, there has to be a spot or more that are dripping oil. I found this file on the web and it has a lot of info plus shows the parts that are needed on a two tooth. If you have a 31, yours was built with a two tooth. |

Re: Steering box oil
What is sold as corn head grease is also sold as cotton picker spindle grease.Read the specs, same stuff. You can get it at Tractor supply in Brentwood. You have to look for it,it is NOT with the oils. For some reason it is stored back with the hitch pins and such.Years ago I never found any A vendor bushings that fit the sector shaft tightly,so all those I did leaked. That spindle oil/grease seems to stay in pretty good.

Re: Steering box oil
Anyone ever use or try CV joint grease in a Model A steering box?

Re: Steering box oil
Could work so long as it doesn’t form a tunnel.

Re: Steering box oil
"A tunnel" as in the great escape. Sorry, can't help myself, I am assuming the tunnel allows the oil to seep out.

Re: Steering box oil
I have been using corn head grease for about a year in an F-100 box. It stopped the small leak. I added a zerk fitting on the bottom of the housing to shoot some of the grease on to the sector shaft since I wasn't sure it would get any lube other than initial assembly.
It is meant for sealed gear boxes and I'm sold on it. |

Re: Steering box oil
Shaft bushing is leaking. Fabricate a plate to go over the gear box and be sure there is a chamfer area for a o ring on the box where the shaft exits. You may have to remove a small amount of material. Find a o ring to fit and assemble with the plate retaining the o ring Fill with correct lubricant not grease. You're golden.

Re: Steering box oil
look at the back side of the housing, there is a groove/slot in the housing, if you fill the box to the level of the fill plug, then it is over filled and will drain out the slot/groove at the back of the housing
