Default Shaft Collar & Washer on new water pump

Is it necessary to install this on the new pump?

The thrust would depend on how much wear there is in the head and how much
the shaft sticks out behind the impeller. You need to install the pump and check the thrust. It wont hurt to have the collar.

On the new pump, which is stock, not sealed rear bearings, it says to grease the two bearings and install. Will I need to pack the large brass nut housing too or should that be done already with this new pump?

Which pump do you have? The original water pump had a bushing in the rear and used packing behind the nut to seal the shaft, no bearings. The nose had a roller bearing/sleeve. If you got from one of the major suppliers can you post a link to it? One of the new type leakless has lipped seal(s), bushing with fake pack nut that still needs to be greased.

On the new rebuild kit I bought from Snyder's the impeller shaft needed to be ground off on the impeller side. Basically it is a custom fit and gives you the clearance so you only have a few thousandth shaft movement.

If your new water pump has more clearance then it should, the collar can be used to limit the shaft movement. The collar will also prevent the front bearing end cap from popping out, if it is over greased.
