Honorable mention you say??? The problem here is those whose votes were counted did not know the facts. Very much like the voting we see in the political arena.

Low information voters. The biggest impact on the automobile world, Model T engine, Model A, flathead V8, VW, and Chevy small block. They should be on the Mt. Rushmore of engines. Pontiac tri power ????

Obviously the folks who voted did not do much research.

I agree. The category was "Top 10 engines of all time". Probably a great lot of voters don't know car history earlier then the '60s muscle car era.,...jack

In 1935/6 the Flathead V8 was listed as one of the best designed productions engine of the era.By an international group of automotive engineers. I discovered this when I was writing my book. Wish I had more details, maybe some one can add to this.

Let's face it fellas, the world is passing us by. When people ask about my car, which is quite often, the vast majority get a blank look if I mention "flathead".

Sadly, so true. I recently had a not-too-bright fellow ask me if my '35 was a '52. He then asked me if it could go on the freeway.

I don't pay much attention to polls until I know where they were taken and who answered the questions. Go to Hollywood and ask who should be president I'm sure Justin Bieber would win.

I think the Chrysler original hemi belongs on that list, too.

I think it was back in the '50s that Hot Rod magazine published a top ten engine list. The flathead was there. So was the Studebaker V8, along with the Cord V8 and the Duesenberg. I guess the voters weren't old enough. Fits right in with JWL's and others posts regarding the political arena. Gruber had it right!!

If I had to rank them it would be :

1.Small block Chevrolet (Sorry guys, the longevity and sheer numbers made do it).

2. Ford Flathead (Innovative design and longevity).

3. Early Hemi (Again innovative design and their influence on Drag Racing).

After that, to me it's a jumble of personal tastes, period preference, and brand loyalty.

Well, there's another poll that compensates for the one under discussion...
One of my old 1950's rodding magazines, quite possibly "Speed Mechanics", ran an article on the top 10 rodding engines of all time...the flathead won TWO spots on the list!
They considered the Ford flathead (meaning 3 1/16 221) and the Merc flathead (meaning 3 3/16 239/255) as separate engines! Both of course then had to be on any top ten, so if I can dig up that article the balance of the universe will be restored!

The other day I went to the store and a couple of guys in their late 20's were admiring my '48 F1. They asked me if it had a flathead 6 in it. I told them no, it has a flathead 8. They were stunned! Said they had never heard of a flathead 8! They were amazed when I showed it to them. We are getting old, folks.
