Default 29 Tudor gas tank welt

I know that there is a welt that goes between the gas tank and the body (and it needs to be painted the body color) But is there anything that goes between the gas tank and the cowl side panels & the firewall?

If nothing goes there, is it a good idea to put something to prevent squeaks? If so what?

See picture please

Ted (RIP) HATED welt. He'd caulk the cracks, smoothly & have his Striper paint the caulking! NOBODY ever criticized him.

It is hard to believe that some big box home improvement stores employees don't even know what cloth friction tape is!!!!

I restored a 1954 Piper Super Cub for a friend and friction tape was the product of choice for all areas that needed chafe protection.

You know that Henry and Piper were buddies!! That's why all Model A and Piper Cub restorations always use a big hammer for assembly!!

Dennis does what I do - friction tape. Since friction tape wont stick to much except itself, I use contact cement to hold the tape in position. I also use friction tape between the front of the gas tank and the firewall. When I put together my 28 special coupe, I used friction tape between the metal top pieces and the wood framework. Ford used what is know as dum dum to help prevent squeaks. I think friction tape is just as good and it can't be seen once everything it assembled.

I used Gorilla glue to hold the tape and just removed the gas tank again and the tape is still tight found a better tank.

I used the same material the vendors sell for the top of the running board brackets. It's thicker than friction tape, and makes the fit of the cowl pieces a bit tighter. It made getting the welting on top of the tank more difficult at the left and right corners. I would suspect one can do without anything with as many fasteners as are involved.
