Default Transmission Vent ?

On the top of the transmission, where the shifting tower attaches the the gear box, there is a small hole just below the stick. Friend, Bob advised that it is a vent hole. It's to the rear of the tower. My '30 TS doesn't have the hole. How come? Does it vent the transmission, and if so does it make any difference if there is no hole?

The hole is there. You just have to find it and unplug it.

Ya' know, this is why I like this forum so well. Sure enough, I went out to the garage and pulled my floorboard and there it was! The hole is there and it was full of gunk. Cleaned it out and now I'm ready for spring! Can't come soon enough, and it ain't even winter yet.
Sorry, Bob, I'll never doubt you again.

By the way, what is the hole for? Does the transmission have to breathe? The reason I was looking for the hole was because I was losing gear lube down the sides of the transmission. I took the top off and found that the gasket was folded, torn, and gone in places. I replaced the gasket.

The hole is a small vent. When you drive a cold car, the transmission lube heats up from friction, and expands. If the vent is plugged, lube will find a place to leak from when it expands.

Thanks, guys. Maybe that's why I had to replace the gasket!

...and let's not forget that when 'one shifts the transmission, the forks, shifter rails, and gears are moving fore & aft, -and all that displaced air must go somewhere. Thus the vent hole also allows a place for the air to be exhaled and drawn back in during gear shifting.

Very very true, also in UK .Between the two World Wars half the cars on the UK roads were Fords ( hence the dreaded "Horse Power Tax")

I think the AA 4 Speed vents thru the shifter top.
I haven't been able to see any vent holes on the several AA 4 Speeds that I own.

Well,...IF you look at how Ford designed it,..that vent hole is ALSO for the
rear end! The original transmission rear bearing has NO shield / seal,..so the
vent is at the highest point, the shift cover.
