Transmission Vent ?
On the top of the transmission, where the shifting tower attaches the the gear box, there is a small hole just below the stick. Friend, Bob advised that it is a vent hole. It's to the rear of the tower. My '30 TS doesn't have the hole. How come? Does it vent the transmission, and if so does it make any difference if there is no hole?

Re: Transmission Vent ?
The hole is there. You just have to find it and unplug it.

Re: Transmission Vent ?
Ya' know, this is why I like this forum so well. Sure enough, I went out to the garage and pulled my floorboard and there it was! The hole is there and it was full of gunk. Cleaned it out and now I'm ready for spring! Can't come soon enough, and it ain't even winter yet.
Sorry, Bob, I'll never doubt you again. Marty |

Re: Transmission Vent ?
By the way, what is the hole for? Does the transmission have to breathe? The reason I was looking for the hole was because I was losing gear lube down the sides of the transmission. I took the top off and found that the gasket was folded, torn, and gone in places. I replaced the gasket.

Re: Transmission Vent ?
Thanks, guys. Maybe that's why I had to replace the gasket!

Which proves once again that these cars are...living...breathing...driving... pieces of a Great American History

Re: Transmission Vent ?
Very very true, also in UK .Between the two World Wars half the cars on the UK roads were Fords ( hence the dreaded "Horse Power Tax")

Re: Transmission Vent ?
I think the AA 4 Speed vents thru the shifter top.
I haven't been able to see any vent holes on the several AA 4 Speeds that I own.

rear end! The original transmission rear bearing has NO shield / seal,..so the vent is at the highest point, the shift cover. |
