Can you tell us a little more about this "Gunk"? Is it rust? Is it oily? Pictures might help.

After severely cleaning the oil out of my radiator with DAWN dish washing detergent and flushing it thoroughly I filled the system with RUST 911. Left it in while driving the car for a few days. Flushed the system and filled with coolant. It is now rust free and runs cool, even in a parade.

White vinegar works well as does coke.

+2, that's better and cleaner than the vinegar method I used.

I was planning on doing something like this. Can you tell me, what was your ratio of Dawn Dish Soap to water?

If you run the car with more cleaner, don't forget to use a filter or you may dislodge some rust/gunk that will only clog the radiator.

Use a nylon sock or pantyhose in the hose from the head into the radiator.

Problem with the sock filter is the incline that the outlet is set at . Shut off the engine and much of the rust crud can fall back into the engine. Gano filter is one that traps the rust so it can't go back down to the block. With that in mind always flush with all hoses off so the huge supply of rust in the rear of the block won't dump into the radiator.

When i cleaned my radiator that would let it overheat i found more blocked grease in the tubes than anything else. I let it soak topped off with degreaser (purple power stuff i think) for 24 hours then hooked a swimming pool pump up to the outlet and blasted the gunk out. Worked rather well and no more overheating. Did the same to the block and flushed alot of silt and very fine rust particles out. I did a very thorough job of poking back there with a stiff wire for hours when i had the engine out. Then used an air wand shoved back there to really clean it.

Rust 911 will convert rust to silt so a filter or screen isn't required.
Be sure to thoroughly back flush the cooling system after treating with Rust911 refill with antifreeze & distilled water.
