You can guess why they're driving with the doors open.

Good info on the Road of Life in this video:

Doors were open so when it fell through the ice the driver could escape.

There's a TV reality show called "Ice Road Truckers" where they haul stuff over frozen Canadian lakes. Sometimes they drive with door(s) open to watch for ice cracking and to be ready to jump out if the truck breaks through.

Replace all the fluids and clean the sludge out of the sump - it should start right up!

They are probably all playing their part in Russia's defeat of Germany on the Eastern Front. Interesting pictures of one of those game changing moments in history. Thanks for posting.

That's how they ran cars full of booze from Canada during prohibition.Standing on the runningboard with one leg inside the car in case the ice broke.I had to look at a map to be sure, because I just read a story about carrying the alcohol into Detroit. The story said they came out of Canada heading due north across the ice. They were right,Canada does reach in under Detroit. They said that T's were cheap, and they could carry 90 gallons of whiskey.

Chances are it'e lake lagoda and they were crossing on the ice to get supplies to Leningrad (St Petersburg) which was under siege for three years. The Germans would strafe them on the ice. Seems to me that I read they only ran across the ice at night. Leningrad was one of the last places you would want to live at this time. People froze to death and their bodies weren't found until spring.

The Red Army used decimation as a deterrent to cowardice in the summer of '42,the soldiers were lined up and every tenth one was shot by a kommisar, to instill 'courage' in the other nine.Throughout the war the Red Army used punishment battalions (men who broke red army law) as mine sweepers...they would march across a suspect field in a close order line...to lose a few truck drivers was nothing..

Thumbs up Re: MM166699 found !

Well done Terry! You can improve your Russian by watching episode one of the Russian TV serial "Lagoda" online (filmed on location I think) which features good GAZ AA and MM action as well as NAZI vehicles, see:

Thanks! Learning Russian is difficult because you have to not only learn the pronounciation and meaning, but a complicated alphabet too. When I lived in NJ it was near a large Russkoeya Expat Community (Cassville, Farma ROVA, Jackson) and Novoya Russkoeya Slovo was sold in the local stores and that began my education. By looking at the pictures and matching the descriptions, I was able to discern their proper usage....Somewhat! I sold in the Flea Market at ROVA and heard a lot of Ya, Te, moy, i, Sto Eto, Sto electrica, Avto, Schivenya. Ya Prodiyetsa Or at least what I interpreted to be. I will never be fluent, But I won't be totally ignorant of these great people. The really surprising thing was their attitudes towards Stalin. They considered him to be a great man, But they wanted nothing to do with him and took some pretty wild chances to get away from him. This "Schizophrenic" attitude that Russians held was almost incomprehensible to an American. Great Peop[le, great memories!
