Default Vin numbers

What differentiates Vin numbers between a 1936 ford roadster, cabriolet and coupe. Can you tell between the 3 models by the Vin number?

vin number only tells the year of manufacture, nothing to do with the ford body/model number.

No. Numbers were assigned to the engine/transmission assembly when it passed inspection. Then they were shipped all over the country to assembly plants with no tracking of the numbers. When the engine was dropped into the chassis the same number was stamped into the frame.

The VIN or ID number is strictly a sequential production number. It will not identify body type.

You may have confused the fact that Ford PART number do have a body designation built into them usually the first 2 numbers after the prefix. As an example when I was working on my 40 Woodie, finding any 01A-79xxxxx part I knew would fit my wagon (body # 790). However, if a part fit several body styles, it often would only have the number of the first of the series. This goes to Ford's system of not changing a part number if the part didn't change.
As stated, VIN will give you a year and idea of when the vehicle was made during the production run.

Ford only had a few prefixes until 1949 or so. It was mostly about the engines. A & AA were model A & AA truck. AB, B & BB were the continuation of the model B cars & trucks with the improved B engine. 18 was for V8 with 221 cid for cars & light trucks. BB was still used for trucks & 4-speed equipped light trucks till 1942 or so. 54 was for the V8 60 engine equiped cars & light trucks. 99 was used for the vehicles with the 239 cid engine like the Mercury and some trucks or special order cars for a while. There were other prefixes for G model 6-cylinder engines and likely one for the 9N engines used in light trucks in 1941. Here's a link. http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/f...ialnumbers.htm

Numbers are sequential for each different engine application. Canadian Ford vehicles are different.

I think that system was used for body parts.

The same basic system was used for chassis parts as well with first-used prefixes being the same. Obviously there was no body reference in the specific chassis part numbers.
