Default bending gutters to curve?

Does anyone have a suggestion for the best way to bend the gutter and metal holder to fit the curve needed for the car?

The new gutters are not pre-bent and this looks like a real challenge.

This is for a 1929 Model A Tudor.

Thx.

Welcome to the Ford Barn. The fellow that bent mine used a tool like a conduit bender but was mounted stationary horizontally. both parts of one side were bent at the same time.

Rob Crooke that’s a good question there. I have a 31 and need this done also. There’s a guy in Texas that can do it but can’t call his name right now. I believe he is with Richardson’s Model A’s.

Harbor Freight has a bender stand mounted. or build a template on flat table(plywood).with various stops at the bending points as needed. Pre cut cardboard shape for pattern transfer to plywood top. start bending little at a time. Easy!

I bent the rain gutter for my 1930 Tudor by bending it around a small diameter tree trunk. After matching the bend radius of the rain gutter with the the rain gutter mounting location on the car I then trimmed away the ends of the gutter.

You must build a fixture and mandrel or you will collapse the drip rail while shaping it where it will no longer snap on.

Wouldn't it be a great idea to ask the Alu rain gutter supplier to pre bend them ? Maybe stop buying the un bent ones ?

I formed my rain gutter around the tree trunk nearly 40 years ago and do not recall any problems snapping it in place to the base strip nailed to the car. The last time I showed the car it won 2nd place in its class.

I wonder if using a bending tube that plumbers use to bend small diameter copper tubing would work for bending the gutter.

It's a bbee--itch! I bent mine with a bending jig I built! As advised to do, and It wasn't enough! I sandwiched the form block between two pieces of wood. In theory, it should have worked. But we all know what some theories are worth! Another way I tried was to bend them hot. I made a form and tack welded it onto a small fabrication table and heated them up to soften them. It should have worked! But sadly........ Now I'm trying to contact some old timer who can bed them. Good Luck! If you find a good way, please share it with us!

Vern,

My body shop had a trial at that. They used a window curtain guy to bend then but it failed.

Problem being, the upper and lower part don't stay together (snapped). So will have to have a counter shape to presse the two parts together.

Why doesn't any body influensual from the barn conact Snyders or Brattons, in order to get the supplier to bend them ?

How can I help ?

How much more are you willing to pay for the labor to have them pre bent. How much more are you wiling to pay you have it shipped in a larger box?

I guess I would be willing to pay the same price like the pre-bent steel ones ...
