Default Auxiliary Heater

Can anyone identify this item? Is this actually something that could/would have been used in a Model A?

My friend has one of those in his Model T. You heat up the coals beforehand and then rest your feet on the carpet. Keeps your feet warm until the coals cool off.

The only way those photos could be worse, if they were out of focus too! It does look like it could be heated by hot coals.
