Default Attaching shoulder upholstery panels - phaetons

Soon I will be installing the upholstery in my 29 phaeton. It seems like the hidem welting fasteners will be very close to the outer edge of the wood at the top of the shoulder panel - front and rear. I was concerned that regular tacks might split the wood as the upper part of a tack is much wider then the bottom. If anyone has installed a phaeton upholstery kit, would you post how it went and what fasteners you used to install the hidem. I am attaching a picture of a finished car to show where the concern is.
