Cutout
A simple question:
On either side of the cutout, with the car not running nor any battery power connected to the car it should be and open curcuit (all wires connected as normally to the cutout).

Re: Cutout
Yes, even with the battery in place it should still have open contacts until the generator puts out more than 6 volts.

Re: Cutout
I though so, mine appears stuck closed... So Berts sell original restored ones.

Re: Cutout
Well upon further review, a short to ground from the cutout's twin yellow wire (horn & lights is the cause). Have just the black and yellow wire there was no short across the cutout and she started like a champ. I'm guess maybe gook in the spider (bottom of the steering column area).
I would think an ohm meter on each spider contact will further show where the short is...

Re: Cutout
Sure it is stuck closed. They all stick at one time or another. That's the classic problem with the cut-out.

When you shut down your car & turn off the gas, ALWAYS check yo AMPUMETER for a discharge, which is usually a stuck cut-out. Sometimes, a re-start will open it, if not, TAP-TAP-TAP & SEE IF YO' AMPUMETER IS ON "0" Cut out operation is SIMPLE, the fine wire winding pulls it closed & the HEAVY wire winding keeps it CLOSED & also allows the charging output to go to the battery. Re: Cutout
With an ohm meter I saw zero resistance across the cutout (closed circuit with the car not running.. What I'm seeing is that the is some short elsewhere where the two yellow wire feel the lights, and horn....

Re: Cutout
I've never had my 87 year old cutout stick in the 20 years I've been using it. Many of the cheap repro units have problems, but a good original has always been trouble free for me. Bert's sells restored original cutouts.
An original cutout output terminal should show no contact to the input terminal with the engine off. This also means you measure the ohms with no wires attached. It also should show no contact to ground. Be sure the insulators are in place and be sure the 2 screws aren't too long. The input terminal on an original cutout should show about 50 ohms to ground. Repro cutouts have less wire and will show about 30 ohms to ground. |

Re: Cutout
So the short (or cutout) really drain my battery, so I removed the battery did a slow charge (check the with a hydrometer) cleaned the positive ground connection at the frame to clean metal...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFqgDPzEau4 And trying a new Solid State made in USA cutout from Berts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1Z3QpOlN74
