Default Source for good points cams?

I was going through the ignition system on my S/W and while checking points gap, rotated the cam lobe to check timing, but decided to verify the gap just one more time before I set the timing, I noticed that when I re checked it the gap went from .018" to .024", I thought that cant be, so for the heck of it I checked every lobe and to my surprise they all varied from .016 to.024. This cam came with a rebuilt distributor from a well known parts house, which is disappointing needless to say.

Does anyone have a source for good points cams that dont vary so much?

Bill Stipe's distributor cams are the best ones made.

Stipe Machine makes the best distributor cam. This part has 10 more degrees of dwell for a hotter spark. Call 920-467-2895 ask for A-B cam ,part number SMC 0033 . The last that I heard the price was only $12.75

As well as consistent point opening gap, you also want the points to start oepning exactly 90* apart. I have checked both on my homebuilt distributor tester and haven't had a problem with Bratton's cams, which are the "B" cam with 10 more degrees dwell, and as far as I know these are the only cams being made today.

I have also bought cams from Bert's and found the same good quality.
I haven't bought any cams for the past few years, so hopefully the quality still remains.

How did you get to that page? I tried to find their general catalog to peruse their products and could not find any catalog or products page other than your link.

It might not be a worn lobe,it could be a sloppy big rear bushing allowing the shaft and internals cock to 1 side when you tighten up the timeing screw as that pulls the whole guts over to 1 side, a minute amount to be sure but might be enpugh to upset the gap. Also points must be set with coil screwed down to dist. Only applys to Helmet dist.Bushings must be fairly snug.Just able to be turned by thumb and first finger. ken ct. Any slop there will be multiplied at the cam lobes.

Ihave good USA made points if you need. ken ct. Personally i dont think you need a new cam assembly its either the bushing or cheap China made points. ken ct.

Bill Stipes website is now http://www.specialtymotorcams.com/
Also, if your points gap varies, check your distributor shaft bushes for wear. When I first got my Tudor, it ran rough. I checked the points and set them to .020". It wouldn't start afterwards. As I was checking other things, my dad rechecked the points and found them closed. We found we could open and close the points just by wobbling the shaft.

Like Ken, I would check elsewhere first, as I've never heard of a cam having lobes that far out of spec. Also make sure the upper plate doesn't have side play. Between worn dist. bushings and a loose upper plate you can vary the points gap quite a bit.

I'd send back the cam and ask for a new one. Something's really wrong with one that far out, and I'm sure the dealer would like to know about it.

Russ,
Once you get on that page, there are buttons on the left side of the page. Hover over thim off to the side a bit, not directly on the words themselves. Your cursor should turn to the perverbial finger. Click on it then and it should take you to the page you are pointing at.

He does have 2 sites, don't remember the other one.
