Anybody know which came first , the rough indent or the smooth indent? Surely I'm not the only one that is aware of this variation.

I have never seen a "rough indent" in person although I am aware that they do exist. I would suspect it was later but really not sure.

There were also some "Re-Stamps", where they took a flat firewall & re-stamped it to make an indented firewall.

The posts have not suggested it being used for a rat rod just that it should be used by someone with the period correct body.

My 31 tudor dlx is a June car and it has a smooth finish, at least as smooth as the rest of the firewall. Ron

Dad's Coupe is an early '31 and I for one am glad. I'm not a fan of the late firewall, not because of the extra step of having to open the hood, I just don't think they look near as good as the flat version.

New club member said he had a 31 with a tear drop fire wall . Tear drop sounds a look more sexy than indented . Makes me feel a lot better about my 31 s/w tear drop with a B engine. So many negatives this week about a B engine and 31 indented fire wall .

Purdy Swoft, Is this what you are calling a rough indent? This is what I have heard called a re-stamp. They were initially flat firewalls that Henry re-stamped in order to use with the new tank design to use up the stock.

Yes, my rough firewall was a restamp. Being a bodyman, I just couldn't resist doing some bodywork to smooth out the rough areas. I've always wondered which came first. Here is my smoothed up firewall.

Do not change your firewall on your slant window cabriolet. That is one of the more valuable Model As and you should restore to original condition for maximum value.

Correct. The rough indented firewalls came first right after the law change. They took their left over flat firewalls and restamped them before making the new dies.

I knew a guy that drilled a hole in his indented firewall and put a little metal rod there connected to the shut off valve handle. He could push and pull on the rod from inside the car and it would shut off the valve on the outside of the car.

I have always thought it funny that people call the indented firewall "rare" because it was at the end of production, but it always seems like I see more indented cars on tours than flat firewall cars. I've owned 6 Model As and 4 have been indented firewall cars. Just the luck of the draw.

I own two indented firewall Model A's, a 40B and a 68C. These are the only two Model A's I've owned so I'm used to lifting the hood. It never seemed to be a big hassle because I've always done it. I met a lady on the MAFCA Blue Ridge Parkway tour last year who had drilled a hole in her firewall and added a remote shutoff (piece of stiff wire) to her car but I can't bring myself to do that. As was stated before "ignorance is bliss."

Every re-stamp I have seen (5-6) has been in a truck.
