Default Engine Serial Number ID- what do I have?

I have a block with serial number but missing stars and any letter. I think that makes this a service block, but it doesn't have the diamond near the timing cover. It just reads: 3236620. Pad is as cast. That should be an April 1930 number. Purely curious, im trying to figure out what the block is. Maybe service blocks made during serial A production wouldn't have the diamond service block casting feature? Any help appreciated

Replacement engine
Does the engine number match the registration paperwork?

No paper work, it's just a spare engine.

Sounds to me like it started life as a service block.

Thanks

It is obvious that the original number has been removed and that one stamped in its place.

A service block would have a blank pad as the number was assigned when the engine/transmission passed final assembly. The as cast surface looks like some of the pockets were from a round nose punch but it is hard to tell from the picture. If you are really curious raise the original number (I bet it is there) with acid. On the other hand don't worry as most DMV's (you should add your general location to your profile) will assign their own number and not use the engine number.

I'm in metro Detroit. My A is indeed titled off the engine number. The current cracked block, that may be replaced with this if it checks out alright. I never had any paperwork with it when I got it, so had to go through and get it appraised and bonded, have the sheriff come out and sign off on it and pay taxes and fees out the wazoo.

I agree.
As Charlie said, this appears to be a bunch of rounded punch marks sunk below the surface, where a sand cast block has micro mounds sticking out.

See reply #18 for a picture of an original engine number.
