Re: 4 digit motor on eBay
I am surprised that 6100 is into January. I would have guessed mid December at the latest. I am not saying the seller is wrong nor do I claim to be a number guy, I just incorrectly thought Ford had they're *&%$ together and putting out some cars by then. Looks like I need a refresher on the early iron production time line. Good weather here in Michigan to do some reading.

Re: 4 digit motor on eBay
Will a 30 31 transmission work on the early a engines or ar engines?

Re: 4 digit motor on eBay
Isn't a 28/29 transmission the exact same as a 30/31 except for the case lid?

Re: 4 digit motor on eBay
The case and input shaft of the 1928 tranny's are different to match the multiplate clutch. If you change the flywheel to a single plate clutch, then the later transmissions will work just fine.

Geez!
Are some jealous that Mark might make a few bucks on an old piece of iron? It's done everyday! Some sound sorta' like a group old gossips! Anyone want to know how much I paid for "Vermin?" or how much I spent at the grocery store today----------+*&%$&&@#* Bill W.

Re: 4 digit motor on eBay
Wow, this engine certainly has gotten a lot of ink lately.
First, I listed it in the Fordbarn ads because a potential buyer backed out. Mark stepped up and bought it from me. So if you want to know what I was asking for it you can look there. Now realize that I sold it for less than I paid for it because I needed to sell it (money flow, space in my garage). If Mark made a profit or didn't that is his business as far as I am concerned. Second, you should realize that the price of an engine is based on its shape (rough to rebuilt); its completeness (just a block, a short block, a long block); its ability to run; its vintage, etc. Once I bought a three digit engine with the low number pad. I paid $200 for the engine with a transmission. This was one of the two best Model A parts purchases that I ever made (the other was a $5 on-off-dim at Hershey years ago). There were about 630 of these engines with the low number pad made. I sold that engine to my very good friend Steve Ciccalone for what I had in it. When his estate has its auction we will know what an early 3 digit engine is worth these days. I would think that prices would range from a 4 digit engine block to a short number pad three or four digit engine block to a genuine low number pad block depending on condition and number. I would guess that the range would probably be from hundreds to thousands. |

Re: 4 digit motor on eBay
I wish I new low number engine numbers meant more money. Low numbers are four digit ?
I have been giving some blocks away to friends because I will probably never use them. I tell them to bring them back assembled if they are no good and we will try another one. A couple still had good babbitt and have not had one returned. I never paid attention to the numbers.

Re: 4 digit motor on eBay
I've often wondered if there is an equal interest in the Early Model A, as there is in Early 1909 T's? Bob

Re: 4 digit motor on eBay
Bob, to a certain extent I think there is, and both cars share very similar traits. I am gathering parts for an 09/10 Tourabout but I do not want a 2-lever car, nor do I want a real early car because of how "frail" it was originally. Therefore I am making my own open-valve block, going to use a later pan converted to look like the earlier pan, and many other mods like the coil box and etc. My reasoning is I like the look of the early car yet I want to drive it reliably on tours. Likewise, many people love to look at an early T but do not want to drive/own one due to all the nuances. Early A's often share many of those same charms as the early T's. The only thing I find different is the early T's will fetch a much higher price than their later counterparts unlike that in the early Model-A vs. later Model-As.
