Default Muffler mounting help

Reading the Les Andrews book he says:

"6. Place Copper/asbestos gasket over the front muffler inlet pipe flange. Position the gasket so the raised center portion faces down into the muffler pipe:

So my question is, which of these should I use? I have read a lot and people tend to try them both. copper gasket or Model A Exhaust sealant?

dont use a gasket, some prefer a bit of muffler cement. Make sure you put the clamp on the right way and tap it tighter with a small hammer and snug the bolts up. Some use a small floor jack to help hold the muffler up as you tighten the clamp. Fyi the rear exhaust clamp should be loose on the pipe.

Use the clamp in your picture and this sleeve...

No muck or gasket

Put some grease on the clamp or flange and it will tighten up easier.

So the consensus is cement, tap the clamp, and it will be good?

yup, that is how I do it. I have not tried the grease on the clamp, but it sounds like it might help.

If it's an Aries muffler the instructions say not to use the tube or flange gasket just cement. The set of instructions I have are a few years old so that may have changed.

Mitch do you use the sleeve inside the pipe with the large end up inside manifold?

agreed, I haven't seen or heard of it being used but definitely cant see how it would hurt. It will burn off quickly so be aware of excess fumes you probably shouldn't breathe :P

Is there a top side and down side to the clamp? Meaning can you put it on upside down?

yes.
do a search here.
both halves with the smaller diameter on the muffler side, and use brass nuts.
Seaslugs nails this, see response #2 above.

The smaller diameter is easy to tell by the longer slope, vs. the top shorter slope.

Yes, it can only go together one way.
Personally I never had a need to grease the clamp.. It would just make stains when it melted off...this works for me,,, and other methods work for others..

yea look at 1/2 of the clamp and you can tell one flange is "longer". Then look at the profile of the connection. It should fit snug with 100% contact on both flanges.

Sounds good guys. I am going to try the Model A Exhaust sealant. I should have time tonight after work to mount the muffler up. Thanks for the advice and help.

I was able to mount the muffler with cement and the clamp.

My question is how does the rear mount work. The opening for the mount was to small to fit over the exhaust. I had to pry it open some. The castle nut bolt wont fit through the frame far enough to get the nut on.

Right now I have a bolt and nut I had around holding it together.

It also looks like the exhaust is really close to touching the frame.

Here are a couple pictures I took to try and show you.

Any ideas on how to fix this? I don't want to crush the exhaust trying to get the nut on the bolt.

I know... I'm trying to figure out why the clamp doesn't fit.

The exhaust is 1-3/4" outside diameter. This muffler

I used this clamp - A-5256-B

Should I have bought this clamp instead?

I just used a clamp without cement, gasket, et al. I did use a jack under the pipe to hold it up while I tightened the clamp. That was two years ago, no exhaust leaks yet.
