Rod bearing help
Im working on a 39 / 48 100hp engine.
The crankshaft rod journal std is 2.139, my rod ID is 2.107, so .030 brgs will work .. my problem is the rod ID is 2.370 and std is 2.360, so the rod ID is .010 over std, So how do I measure for the bearings ? Seams like the brg needs to be .030 under to fit the crank and .010 over to fit the rod .. but the green book isnt showing anything like that |

You might find the bearings from Max VP. Fitting the floating bearings is a mathematical problem subtract the rod journal diameter from the connecting rod ID and that's the thickness of the bearing minis the Bearing clearance. I like to run .002 on the rod side and .0025 on the crank side. Your going to have to "Hammer" the bearing "round" before installing, I've never worked with this much mismatch, but it does work. Give these numbers to max and he'll fix you up, if he has them.

yes elwood, the prefix of what ever you get may be slightly different, but it should have a 9 in it, ie 99T, which denotes 239: 6211 is the part number for rod bearings: and U is the code denoting .030/.008. Ford numbering system

.010 on the rod is the question. I wasted more time searching for this kind of combination not much luck. This operation has to be correct & taking out a loan. I have no choice but to resize the rods back to standard. So now standard rods and .030 on journals are out there. Now the fun. I put the rod cap back on with some torque and Tap the bearing ends with a soft plastic hammer both half's until both just slide right through the rod with no tight spots so now you have a perfect round shell. Logic is if the bearing OD is round so will the ID. How they pumped all those engines out a day and fitting bearings that would take a thousand people; can't be. My bet is they may have used a precision jig press or something. sam |

I would think that a set of 29A rods would be available, and inexpensive. On you rods the ..010" number is for a.008" oversize bearing which they made. and .002" clearance.

Sounds like the horse has left the barn on existing bearings but Rod bearings aren’t that expensive & as Gramps indicated Max Van Pelt if given your existing crank sizes & Rod bearing nest sizes can set you up w exact requirements.
