Default 1940 Ford Standard/1940 Ford pickup instrument cluster

Good day all

Is there any difference between these two instrument clusters?

I remember seeing a '40 pickup a few years ago that was an original and a basket case. It had a floor shift and the gauge only went to 60 mph as I recall. It also only had a low gear range on the gauge that showed not to go higher than 25 mph.

The half ton and passenger car are identical. I think, but am not certain, that the larger pickup's had that 60MPH speedometer cluster.
Picture attached is from an extremely high point half ton...

Here are pictures of the 40 standard and pickup 100 MPH and the bigger truck 60 MPH. They also had very few with the 100 MPH that had the shift points like the 60 MPH

There are lots of unknowns about commercial vehicles. The '40 pickups could be ordered with the V-8 60 and they came with a 4.44 rear end. Seems logical that those pickups would come with a 60 mph speedometer due to the rear end ratio and the lack of power in the V-8 60.

While that may seem logical, it was not the case.

While the 60hp V8s were certainly underpowered, they are capable of obtaining over 60 mph even with low gearing.

31 inch tires, 4:44 rear axle ratio, 65 mph would be around 3128 rpm. 60hp V8 hp/torque curves list maximum hp at greater than 4000 rpm.

The dash shown by Kube is the exactly the same dash that is in my 1940 pickup.

You're very welcome.
That place is an incredible resource for information regarding our "toys".
The only issue I've ever had with the place is there are never enough hours to study.
