OK! Let's get personal!
if too personal just don't respond! Not intending for this to go into editorials, long debates or attacks for asking etc.
What is your age? Mine is 71 Sort of testing about the spectrum of Model A interest. Down the road draw your own conclusions |

Re: OK! Let's get personal!
I'm a few months shy of 80 and I can see where this is going. From the responses, it looks like our hobby is dominated by guys over 70. The market will be flooded with Model A's during the next ten years or so as we all croak because the younger generations don't seem to be interested in our treasures or don't have the space or the money. The fully restored trailer queens will go to the millenials who have the cash but no knowledge of how to work on them. The rest will likely waste away in garages or out in the back yard or converted to hot rods. This concern about how to preserve our hobby has been going on for some time now. Wish I had an answer.

Re: OK! Let's get personal!
I am older than any Model A ever made. I was with Dad in September 1928 when he traded in his Model T and we drove home in a 1928 Fordor. Bought my first "A" in 1937, before I was old enough to have a drivers license, continuous owner since then. Made my first Ford dealer buyout of obsolete parts in 1947, all Model T parts then, Model A buyouts came later, and V8 still later. Time flies when you are having fun!

Re: OK! Let's get personal!
I'm older than dirt. Almost. Maybe. Oh, I bet you wanted years, not comparisons, right? Well, when I can't remember, my wife says that I am 77, almost 78. When I do remember, I'm 16, and the neighbor girl looks really hot! (Now she looks like a truck drove over her face, sure glad I didn't marry THAT one!) Wait, maybe my wife is right and I'm wrong, I sure have the belly for 77, it takes 15 minutes to pee, and by then it's time to pee again, and I can hardly see my, ooops, ... Well crap, now you have me really confused!!! Nancy, did I take my pills today?
What was the question?

I’m 25 and loving every mile in a Model A! Rolled my odometer to 70,000 earlier this year (or 170 or 270!) so I’ve put about 12,000 miles on my A since I’ve had it.

Re: OK! Let's get personal!
I'm gon'na be 68 in a few months. Been into antique cars, '29 Chevy being the first, since I was 15. In between antiques it was 4-wheel drives,
muscle car and still into Harley's. Just sold my second '29 Chevy and will probably put my '31 deluxe roadster up for sale in the near future. That will leave me with my '29 roadster to finish up repairing. And I'll probably keep it. I've always wanted a cabriolet or a 400-A. But, time is probably going to run out before that happens..... I am currently installing a factory 4 way power seat, that will be replacing a factory 2 way power seat. Keeps me busy and I love it. It is the perfect hobby to keep you alert, sharp and flexible. |

I’m 27 and have had my A for 5 years. I was president of my chapter for a year and have been on the board since. Not as active though as I once was.
Makes it tough when the local club does events on weekdays, and the big national events are not friendly to those who work (unless they fly and don’t bring an A, I guess). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

70. Spending most winter days in the shop finishing a 28 Phaeton. Hopefully a spring debut.
Don't worry about the future of the hobby. Looks like the average age of Model A owners is , say, early to mid 70's today. 10 years from now the average age of Model A owners will still be the same, and so on into the future. Old guys like us like Model A's, along with a few younger guys. I see the trend simply continuing as is. |

I'm 57. This is a picture of my Dad and I at the MARC National meet in Indianapolis in 1970. In the second picture, the truck and I are at the MARC National meet in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in 2012.
Dad will be gone 33 years in January, the truck is still here, both are much loved. Thanks Dad.

Re: OK! Let's get personal!
Now 47.
First rode in a Model A in 1998. Bought my first Model A in 2012. 32000 miles driven on that one, in nine countries. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCbkUphkEJw Second Model A bought in 2013. Only 2000 miles on that, but increasing daily. Fret not young chaps, there's a quiet body of whipper-snappers interested in this madness, even whose day-jobs are about Machine Learning, VR, self-driving cars, and other techno-gadgetry. I've immodestly said many times, if you want to get noticed, a Model A trumps any dern Lamborghini, wherever you are. And I built mine with my own greasy, scarred hands. Safe driving, Andrew |

Re: OK! Let's get personal!
All i have to say is I am glad for you guys, myself I can't stand it. So I got a flat (new tire and tube) my son took it apart and tube had ever so small pin hole, no nails or nothing
looked like a defect so i patched it. 4 hours to mount a measly 6-00-16 not counting sitting down time. gotta be kidding. I have mounted dismounted thousands of 10-00-20 11-00-20 truck and bus tires and now can't even do a toy tire. And I'm the same age as my only set of wheels....UGG |

Re: OK! Let's get personal!
Looked up life expectancy for males in the USA, and several of you, including me, are past your sell-by date. Is that because you, or we, own old cars? Or, is that because we are too stupid to die? Well, whatever, congrats if you reached 77! You beat the national average.
Now me, at almost 78, I'm building a 24 T roadster hot rod. I must be a special kind of super stupid!

I'll be 83 in another week, thought it was time so just sold my 29 coupe as it was getting tougher to drive because of my height of 6-2 and buying my old car back which is a 51 Ford custom fordor with plenty of room for my legs.

I, and my 1930 Town Sedan, which I was able to restore when I was in my sixties, were both born in the decade of the '30s. I barely made it (1939).

Re: OK! Let's get personal!
I'll be 74 in a few days time. Still restoring old cars. Renovating is a better word because I like to have a bit of patina, otherwise I am too scared to drive them and get them dirty.
Thoroughly enjoying my age, though arthritis has slowed me a bit. Count myself very lucky to still have my wife and kids and grand kids around me, unlike some. Best thing I bought other than our cars is a 4 post hoist, so I don't have to get up and down off the floor! Some days that really taxes me. Still working full time in my company that makes automotive and hardware chemical products. That gives me the ability to have a large workshop and house the Auckland model A club rooms in my factory too. Plus it keeps my brain active, Latest cars are a 1953 3 litre Alvis (They still build British fighting vehicles) and a 1962 3.8 litre Mark 2 Jaguar. That's enough from me! SAJ in NZ |

I will be 65 in a few short weeks... Got my 28 roadster ~25 years and 50K miles ago. My daily driver when there's no "salt" on the roads. Basically a old guy who still gets a big charge out of driving his ratty blue roadster way to fast.

I’m 72, have had our 1929 Sport Coupe for 40 years. Got my first Model A in 1961.
If you have a well maintained, fairly priced Model A there will be a good market for it. Don’t worry, just enjoy it. Enjoy. |

I just turned 87. I gave up golf, skiing, running and other such activities but I still enjoy working on my "A". I do however now remove the rear wheel separate from the hub when working in that area.
A 10 mile bicycle ride on a nice day is not out of the question. I am blessed. Lee |

I am 50. My 30 Coupe was a gift my Dad when I was 14. I think I will get it out this weekend and teach my daughter to drive it....in a really big empty parking lot.

Took over custody of my A last August, love the car but really get a kick out of the owners of A’s. Salt of the Earth The Model A’s have been around for 90 years now, they have outlasted all of their original owners. They are older than most of their current owners. They will be around long after we are all gone. Someone will take care of them for the same reason we all do now. Last edited by CSPIDY; 12-11-2018 at 11:01 AM. |

I bought my first Model A in 1964 (29 special coupe). I got married in 1973 and my wife and I bought a 29 Tudor (Agy). It's been in and out of the family, but we own it again. Also have a 1929 Briggs body pickup that I purchased from a good friend's estate. Last edited by Neil Mylar LakewoodCA; 12-11-2018 at 12:59 PM. Reason: spellcheck |

Turned 70 this past July.
Bought my first "A" in 1978. Still have it. Late 1931 Deluxe Tudor. Has potential to be fine points car. Purchased 5 more "A's" after that. Currently helping one of my grandsons restore an early build (April 1, 1964) Mustang. Ray |

I have had friends eMail me that they have followed this thread and that my post number 44 in this thread indicates I am the oldest participating fordbarner, a position with no future. Sheila at MARC headquarters told me well over a year go I am the longest term MARC member, another position with no future. To all you young men who have passed retirement age and are still active and going strong, I salute you. Stay busy and stay involved.

At 37, i'm probably one of the younger Model A owners. I inherited it from my grandfather about a year ago. I'm determined to get my 1000-Mile patch this year! Also, I took over as president of Sooner Model A Club in Oklahoma City this week, so I'm also among the youngest current club presidents.

Turning 28 here in a few weeks. Bought my Model A (29 Fordor) a couple of weeks ago and haven't quit tinkering with it since. Girlfriend believes that A's are an old man's sport but hasn't missed an opportunity to come out to the shop and admire the old gal.

Re: OK! Let's get personal!
What is my age?, comes with a story. I am a high-school teacher, I joined the Model A Club to hang out with adults. They are all old. My new two new best friends are in their 80s. After an endearing day of school with freshman, I rush to the garage to work on a car with my "new" two best friends "in their 80s". I walk in and they're playing, "You want to see where the shark bit me" and "You want a "Hurtz donut"". I am 57, 44 years older then my 80 year old friends. I feel sorry for my senior high school girls. We boys never mature.
By the way I won the Hurtz Donut, 80 year olds are whimps.

TI am in my 75th year, celebrated my 50th in 2018 with my truelove, bought, restored, and still own our only Model A '31 coupe in '72 when we barely had two nickles to rub together and cleaned the frame (and everything else that needed it) using two B&D drills + wire brushes.

48 years young,
Little personal note my grandfather was 48 when my dad was born, unfortunately never meet my grandfather. I hear he was quite the tinker and owned several Model A's in his time. You know what they say, every other generation, my dad could give a rats a$$ about cars. One of my favorite quotes from an older gentleman when I was younger: "How old would you be if you didn't know how old you were" I think this sums it up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McRNSFGwqtY Last edited by lsr490; 01-11-2019 at 02:07 PM. Try 72 on for size. Purchased by first "A" in 1978 - still own it and have added quite a few more to the fleet over the years. Great hobby!

Re: OK! Let's get personal!
I was 34 when I got my A. I had to have it ready for my wedding, so no time was available to waste RESTORING it. By then I was 35. Kind of odd that a 34 year old guy wants an original A. I don't care, it's my money, and my car. What I like is what counts not some hot rodder. Although, I do have a streetrod.
I'm 58 now. |

My wife says men get older, but they never grow up! A friend of ours has a t shirt that says "still plays with cars"

70 heading swiftly to 71. Got my first A a little over a year ago. Never realized how much fun I was missing. Frustrating at times but fun

Re: OK! Let's get personal!
I've never thought of driving a Model A or any of the other old cars as "fun", just nostalgic. I guess when I drove them "back then" they were just transportation and filled a need.

Re: OK! Let's get personal!
Cool thread although i think this topic surfaces every few years. 55. Had a few prewar cars, joined Fordbarn many years ago when we had our 30 tudor. Sold a couple cars off to buy a nice old Packard, sold off the A stuff and of course, got back into an A in 2015. So now I an re-acquiring all the spares... what a hobby!

Re: OK! Let's get personal!
Let's put it this way... A Model A was parked in my head in 1960 when I was 16.. finally a Model A was parked in my garage in 2017... I'm now 75. A long wait but absolutely worth it!!
