Help needed 48 V8 firetruck generator
A friend in Athens TN is looking for a working generator for a 48 Ford V8 F-5 firetruck. The truck is to be a driver, not a functioning firetruck. Does anyone in the Athens TN area have a generator to sell?
If you can help reply to: [email protected] or leave me a PM. I can pick one up for them at Hershey but local might be quicker and better. Thanks. |

Re: Help needed 48 V8 firetruck generator
Didn't the 1948 trucks F 5 and larger use the 337 cid engine that was used in Lincolns the next 3 years? That generator was different than the regular Ford.

I am told that it is not the 337 engine. ( I thought those were F7-8 only)
Thanks, Dick |

Re: Help needed 48 V8 firetruck generator
Is the generator gone? Many fire trucks used a Leece-Neville generator even back then. I know of a '48 fire truck that is all original and has this generator on it.

Re: Help needed 48 V8 firetruck generator
Interesting point Joe I have not seen the truck. They tell me it has a Leece Neville Alternator (apparently 6 volt) which they can't seem to find a regulator for. i'LL inquire.
Thanks, Dick |

Re: Help needed 48 V8 firetruck generator
If you have the older Echlin part number for the regulator I may have one. Or even another makers part number as long as you have the brand also I may be able to cross reference it. I have over 70 NOS and NORS voltage regulators and afew used ones marked as being good from the salvage yard I cleaned up a couple of years ago. There was also the remains of a fire truck, so maybe one of those flathead generators came off of it. If I knew exactly what I was looking for I would be happy to check. The local Fire dept. has a 46 firetruck they put in parades, maybe I could go look at that for some hints. Rod

Re: Help needed 48 V8 firetruck generator
I don't know if this is what they have but the parts book shows a
60 amp generator, 8BA-10002-C, as an option. The regulator is 8BA-10505-A. Bob |

Re: Help needed 48 V8 firetruck generator
No listing in the interchange book for the 8BA-10505-A regulator. Most through that era are showing the Echlin VR-401 which is the common 30-35 amp. The excetion is the B3TZ-10505-A which interchanges to the Echlin VR-403. That would be 53 Truck. I can see if I have one and how many amps it is rated for. Rod

Re: Help needed 48 V8 firetruck generator
It does not appear I have that one here at the house. Will check at the farm when I can get there. The flood waters from Colorado last week have the Platte river flooding here and as of yesterday morning I could not get there. Water was started to recede some today, so will see how it is tommorrow afternoon. Rod

Rod, the Hollander interchange number for 8BA-10505-A is #124.

Re: Help needed 48 V8 firetruck generator
OK, I will see what I can do with that number. Wish I had a Hollander, but all I have is the Echlin Napa 1977 "Ignition and Electrical System Parts Cross Reference Guide". Thankfully it goes back well into the 30's, but I am guessing the 8BA-10505-A was superseeded as it is not listed. That is why I was suggesting possibly the B3TZ-10505-A may have taken its place. That should be F-600 and larger version as I think the F-100 in 53 would still use the same as the passenger cars used after 41. Maybe I am wrong in my thinking. Rod

Re: Help needed 48 V8 firetruck generator
All they need is a functioning 6 volt generator. Not trying to replicate fire equipment, just trying to get the truck running. They already have a new 6 volt positive ground regulator. Does anyone in the Athens TN area have a functioning regular 6 volt V8 generator for sale?

Re: Help needed 48 V8 firetruck generator
Dick,
You should check to see whether a stock generator will mount up to whatever generator mount that rig has. Otherwise you need a gen and a mount. I can't believe you'd have a hard time finding one. Worst case, you can order a new one (from lots of places) and have it delivered overnight. |

Re: Help needed 48 V8 firetruck generator
I have some more information. (Sorry, I am doing this for a friend and have not seen the truck)
Attached are pictures of the original generator which they say is OK, tag, and the faulty regulator. Apparently the Leece people haven't been able to help. So the new question is, can anyone provide any ideas about a regulator? Joe and Rowdy perhaps you can take another look. Thanks to all for their thoughts. And yes, the mount might not work with a stock 8BA |

Re: Help needed 48 V8 firetruck generator
I can not see the pic's. Does it have a part number on it anywhere, top, bottom or sides? And possibly what brand it is? Thanks Rod
