Default 1931 Deluxe Tudor Upholstery

It is time for me to order interior upholstery for a late 1931 Tudor that I am planning to show at the National in Washington in 2014.

I bought this car in 1979 and it had a bunch of correct original parts so I decided I would restore it now for fine point judging.

My question is this: I know the Deluxe Tudors came with brown or green mohair as well as a few other interior options. I have registered my Tudor with Rick Black and he mentioned that he had not seen many Deluxe Tudors with green mohair.

Sometime in the mid 1980's I purchased an interior kit from LeBaron Bonney in brown mohair because their green mohair at the time was not very attractive. I am attaching photos of the original upholstery from my car with a piece of trim that LB sent me back then.

Does this look like green mohair?? Or just well worn brown Mohair.

Also, is there a source for original looking green mohair and someone who would do a fine point interior?

Thanks,
Ray

I used to own a Deluxe Tudor and it had green mohair upholstery. In fact one of my club members owns it now and to my knowledge it is just sitting and not being restored, but I can't say that with absolute certainty.

My 31 is a Tudor Dlx, as in the avatar. Frankly ,I have never seen the green. Yours looks like a well faded brown, but it's hard to tell from the picture. I went through fine point at the Marc/ Mafca Meet in Dallas 2008. It was on a dare by some Tucson members. The car got 350 after 20 years since resoration. I was stunned. Originally I was in the LI Chapter on Long Island . Hi Bruce! Frankly, one of the judges said why would anyone want to go through all that work for F Pt judging? But, I sympathize with you. If you send me a swatch I can see if it's close to brown. Ron

Funny I was looking at a 30 Coupe last night with the original interior. It looked green like yours on the faces but inside of the door pockets it was brown. UV does strange things over time.

regardless of which the original was, your Tudor will look BETTER with the brown mohair. j.m.h.o

I thought that original upholstery looked pretty good. I'd want it if I had a car that it would fit.

The original interior of my 31 Tudor Dlx looks identical to yours. It certainly has a green tint...but who knows what the color did after 80 years or so.

Inspect the seat trim more closely. In the photo it appears the area pointed to below may be a protected, somewhat preserved area. The original color was a more of a rose beige color. Unfortunately the original "brown" turns greenish with age and exposure while the original green mohair fades to brown.

Nobody has ever reproduced a decent green mohair. It seems like a contradiction but the only way I can describe the original green would be a dark green which was rich but muted in color. All modern versions I've seen leaned way to much toward forest green, great for Christmas decorations .

If you have any of the original trim panels there should be some preserved areas on the back side.

In summer of 1953 my dad bought a one-family/two owner indented firewall '31 Deluxe Tudor. The upholstery of interior was intact and looked dark brown everywhere. Worn, but looked 'factory' in all respects.

Gather orig paint color was a dark brownish maroon, based on intact and well maintained dash. Similar to an old UPS truck color of the 50s, as I noted at the time.

Regards,

Dyson
