I use John Deere Corn Head Grease . . . is almost like a thick out and it is wonderful in our early steering boxes! If you want a picture of the 'tube' - can take one when I'm out in my shop later on today.

It is thick except when it is under pressure, as between the gear surfaces.

What is embossed on the fill plug?

If you want the steering box to not leak have a modern seal installed in the sector housing and solder the tube that is in the steering shaft for the horn rod.
