Options for mounting a spare tire on my '41PU
Hello all,
I'd like some suggestions or options for mounting the spare tire on my PU. The only thing I currently have is a hole in the running board and the divet in the fender. TIA, Randy |

Re: Options for mounting a spare tire on my '41PU
there is a brace that goes under the divot that goes back to the frame and a brace/mount that goes on the side of the box. same system from 1940 to 47. I just bought a 45 military parts pick up and should get it this week which I think still has these pieces. pm me if interested

Not much for options. The stock mount used these parts for '38 - '41.

Randy,
I have pictures and measurements for mounting the spare tire on a 40 or 41 pickup. Send me your email address or phone number and I will get this information to you. I am in the Charlotte area. Ted |

Re: Options for mounting a spare tire on my '41PU
I wish I had checked into all of this before I painted my new bed and could have mounted the "bed only" mount. Looks like I need what Bill has in the above photo. I've checked ebay off and on and havn't seen any. I've also not seen them listed in any of the parts vendors that I use. Any recommendations on gettting the parts?

If you find the bracket just paint it, bolt it on with some button head allen bolts. Check with Mack Hils pickup parts as he may make the bracket. Or alanwoodieman indicates he has the part you need.

Re: Options for mounting a spare tire on my '41PU
nothing goes to the frame or under the "divet" in the fender. Nothing goes into the hole in the running board. The correct bracket is hard to find probably because they all failed at the rivets and some farmers may have thrown them away and chained the tire to the bed or left the tire in the barn. I recall at one time a reproduction was made, not sure if they were any good. I used button head bolts as described by TJ. The trick is the nut has to go down inside the stake pocket. The correct part number is 01C 1434A for the bracket. That signifies a 1940 commercial application. I forgot the "A" in the above post.

Re: Options for mounting a spare tire on my '41PU
Quick search found that Classic Truck Central has the correct bracket shown (new) for $125. I do not know how good it is but it looks right and has the adjustment plate. Sounds like you are done! Paint it and install. Take lots and lots of time setting it up to locate the mounting points. When correct, it will clear the door opening (duh) , will not touch the cab (clears by about 3/8 inch, and does not hit the fender divet or the running board.

Thanks for the replies. Alan I didn't see that in your post. I'll PM you. I'll also look into the bracket that Floyd mentioned. I also need to pick up a wheel and tire. I'm running 15" Mercury wheels. I'm not sure what I'll do for a wheel and tire.

Re: Options for mounting a spare tire on my '41PU
Here's what I'd installed upon my '40 restoration. This was a very early production truck and as such had the carry over bracketry from '39. It appeared to be born with this.
I am quite certain Ford went to the single piece welded to the bed side for major cost savings. Too bad as this was another case where "cheaper" was obviously not better.

Re: Options for mounting a spare tire on my '41PU
The parts books sometimes let you down. The black and white parts picture posted above is actually for a 36/7 pickup. The 38/9 uses a different 1404 rod with two "eyes" in the middle, not one. The 38/9 used the same wide 5 locking spare that looks much like a frying pan as the 36/7. The 40/41 would not have had the wide five bolt pattern and could not have used that spare mounting flange and I doubt it used the same locking spare.

Re: Options for mounting a spare tire on my '41PU
If you have access to Mack Hil's Ford Pickups book 1932-1952. Look at page 118 and there is a pretty good picture of the bracket with tire band. I have that same bracket on mine and it has a factory brace that attaches to the front side of the stake pocket. We just built a new bed and used nutserts in the pocket. This bracket was welded to the underside of the bed rail on the other bed sides I took off but it is now bolted with 3/8 " short carriage bolts just below the top rail as well as smaller ones at the bottom. Hope this has some value ?
