Default Rebuilt starter

Could I ask for opinions regarding rebuilt starters? My 1946 flathead v8 starter is needing replaced. Who is best at rebuilding mine or who sells outright rebuilt ones? Original 6 volt positive ground with old style bendix is preferred. I just want to know that it is rebuilt correctly. Thanks

Randy,
If you are handy at mechanical and electrical work they can be rebuilt at home. If not, seek out an automotive electrical service in your area. If you are a member of the Early Ford V-8 club you can look in the roster section for members in Tennessee and maybe call around with your search. They are pretty heavy to be shipped for repair. I googled "Tennessee automotive electrical repair" and came up with 5 hits. 2 in the Nashville area

After having a local shop rebuild my starter it still failed a couple of months later. Bought a new unit from Dennis Carpenter and everything has been great.

NAPA, about $100. They are properly remanufactured. You'll need to talk with a counter person over the age of 12.

There is a place in Arlington, TX called Ream's Auto Electric. They have done all sorts of starter and generator work for me over the years. I highly recommend them.

Thanks for the help. I called my NAPA and he said they could not get one. They couldn’t find it listed in their information. Another big supplier answered and said theirs come from India. I am holding out for an American one. I will keep looking. Wish me luck!

This. If you wait for the 20% off sale, you can get it for $80. That's a steal.

Order it on line from Napa. Their search function is funny for old stuff. I've had good luck listing the vehicle as a '49 F-1 1/2 ton pick up. Seems to get a lot of flathead related parts using this vehicle. It doesn't matter if this is not what you have, starter is the same.

Once you see the F-1 as the "selected vehicle". Search starter. It should come up and select having it shipped to your local store. This way you can bring in the old one to get back the $22.00 core charge.

You'll need to take off your bendix part, but that's pretty simple.

Randy, I had mine reconditioned by Vintage Voltage in Villa Park Illinois. You can have the basic or concourse quality restoration. Early V8 Clubmember as well.

I think the problem with your local NAPA was the person doing the searching. That is why “Kube” made the comment about the age of the counter person. Searching online would bypass the person and you could find it yourself. NAPA has a lot of parts for our cars but it takes an experienced person to find them. You can also try “rock auto.com” but I’m not sure what country that one would come from. A lot of their stuff is “old stock” USA made.
Good luck with your search...... Mark

You need to speak with someone else. I got one from them less than two months ago.
Crap, it took me all of thirty seconds to find it. Listed for $57.

The online NAPA lookup is pretty good, as someone else mentioned.
They are the only main parts supplier that has accurate listings-
I worked for a bearing manufacturer here in the US up until June and
our listings weren't even as accurate as the NAPA cataloging.
(Most of it's gotten through a company called Vertical Development, but
NAPA's data is more accurate for some reason)

Rock Auto is more than NAPA. Plus it's some off shore company.

Here is the link to NAPA. Put in for pick up in the store nearest to you.

Interesting. Kube, do you happen to have the part # from the invoice?

I have a spare core that I'd love to get another one; especially if I can get it for $57.

Nope, that went with the client.
I had, in a previous post, given all the information from the NAPA site I found today. And, it now appears others have found the same.

If you use the number Kube uses, RAY 2449609, it is $57, but it say that one is for a mid 50's Ford. Will that also fit the earlier flatheads?

Something strange is going on here. When I look up that number, it shows 1948 Ford.

Interesting. Very cool. I just ordered and it will be here tomorrow. Plus, I had $5 in reward points so it will be $52.00. Opted to pay in store so I don't have to pay the $22.00 core charge.

Edit: Wait, fellas. Look at the mounting flange for in the picts. in the link. It may not be correct.

Tim, Chances are extremely high that the photo you see on the NAPAONLINE site is not the item you get in the box.

Still watching for how this turns out though!

Interesting. I'll report back once I pick it up. Would be great if it's 12V. I can swap over from another one I have.

Look with what we deal with in Canada.
https://www.napacanada.com/en/search...onEnabled=true

I believe in buy local but not when they do this. $323.27 + 27.01 core charge plus 15% sales tax. $402.82 cad or 300USD!
Rock auto is less than half. And that didn’t include core charge.

Right. According to the pictures, we've determined this is not the correct starter since the front mounting plate is different.

It may be worth it if it's 12V and you can swap over the guts to a 6V donor.

I picked up the $57.00 12V Y block starter. Totally different than a flathead. The picture was accurate. Armature shaft is longer and thinner. No cut to a woodruff key and case is different. Oh well. I'll put on my table at Hershey. No returns since it was special order and an electrical part.

you use that outer case, with your 6v armature, and now you have a 12v flathead starter
