Default Can’t find stock color tan front mat?

Hi guys, I’m replacing the front floor mat on my ‘35 Tudor. I’ve got a ‘39 tranny in the car so I’m thinking a mat for a ‘39 would fit better as the ‘39 tranny tower & stick come thru floor in a different position than the ‘35 tranny was. My original mat color was tan & matched the interior. I can only find the ‘35 mat in tan but for the ‘39 only black? Also while I’m asking, when did Ford start using carpeting on front floor instead of the fitted rubber mat?

Thx 19Forty but that’d Need to be cut to fit & even then the opening for the shifter would b way too big. If I can’t find the right one for the ‘39 I’ll get the ‘35 & modify it or get the black ‘39.

Anthony- I have a 32 Phaeton with a reproduction front floor mat in a taupe color. I bought a rear floor mat but it was black. I was told to use a vinyl and rubber paint named SEM Color Coat #15033 Saddle Tan. It was a perfect match in color to the front mat and has not flaked off or faded. It comes in a spray can and is available thru Amazon. One can was enough for my mat, but I ordered two, just in case. SEM has a large variety of colors, too.

We normally follow up with a coat SEM satin clear.

Carl, you were lucky in that the taupe color of '32-'35 reproduction floor mats is often all over the place in terms of the shade of color depending on who made them and when they were made.

Thx for the info on the vinyl paint, I’ve used on interior panels with success. Probly if I was doing the rear in a mat would do as it doesn’t get much traffic. My ‘35 Tudor has a very nice taupe rear carpet. While not as happy as I’d be with taupe I’ll just go black in front or maybe go non-stock & make a pattern from my existing ‘35 black mat to cut a DYI taupe carpet.
Thx for the suggestions

David- I bought a repo rear mat from Mike McKennet a few years ago(his last one, I think). It was black. He told me about the KEM paint #15033. It worked out great except it was'nt a perfect color match for the front mat I had so I sprayed both mats. Perfect.

Carl,

I have Mike's mats for both of my phaetons and in one case it's a match as is and in the other it will have to be painted, likely along with the front one to do as you have done.

Use a 1936 Ford mat.. It will fit perfectly w/ your trans.

35fordtn, thinking ‘35-‘38 Trans is same config. Changed inside & out in ‘39. Frame is the same from ‘35 -‘40. Doesn’t the through hole in the floor change w the ‘39 tranny? My ‘35 w the ‘39 Tranny moved the thru-hole requirement quite a bit. I had to cut the hole in the floor & in the mat to fit the tranny? Help me understand?
Thx

The shift tower moved forward with the '36 transmission and stayed in the location until at least through the '48 commercial vehicles. That's why Michael (35fordtn) recommended a '36 mat as everything else about its size is the same as a '35 mat.

Thx, David, & Michael, always learning w these Early Fords. I swapped out the ‘35 to a ‘39 tranny a while ago after reading here & other places Ford made changes improvements to ‘39 tranny improving shift drivability. Wrongly assumed that was the change inside that caused the outside of tranny too. Oops
Good to keep learning

You’d want a 36 mat. If you use a later mat you’ll have to cut the hole for the parking brake and starter switch. The reproduction Benton grey 36 mat is very close in color to the 35 taupe mat
