Default 52 F1 leaf spring

Hi folks

I've accomplished many first time projects (with a lot of good advise here) since purchasing my 52 f1. I'm now looking to another.

LMC sells a 3" lowering front leaf spring (sorry 4 sideways pic attached).

Since my truck front spring is shot. I'm thinking of this as a replacement.

The questions:
- how hard is it to replace? What to watch out for...
- is the spring under tension when truck is jacked up?
- can someone provide a step by step procedure?

Should be a fairly easy mod. This springs are not under tension if it is supported properly.

Hey Jerry

Can you elaborate? Properly supported, meaning have a jack under it to eliminate tension?

Not that you asked, but you may also want to consider a dropped axle with stock multileaf springs. If the ride is too stiff you could remove a leaf or two to suit your tastes. Not hard to accomplish either way you decide.

Yes, LOL. The springs are only shackled at one end. If you support the spring the shackle can be removed and then the fixed end. Take a look at it and you should be able to see how it goes together (and comes apart).

From the manual:

Raise the truck frame until the weight is off the springs but so the wheels still remain on the floor. Remove the nuts from the lower shackle bolt and drive the bolts from the shackle and bracket. Remove the nuts from the two U-bolts which secure the spring to the axle.

Here are a couple of typical type photos (they are of earlier years, but similar setup).

Andy,You can do it one of 2 ways as mentioned above by Jerry,or by putting jack stands under the front part of frame to let everything hang.. then knock out 4 pins and drop the axle and springs together then you can get out on floor to disassemble alot easier that way the you can also evaluate all the other components and go from there.

Thanks Ken, I think, I'll stick with Jerry's advise. I have a four post lift, it should make it somewhat easier

I just did this over the weekend on my '48.

LMC is just re-selling Posie's Dual Flex Springs. You can get them cheaper through SPeedway motors.

I bought the shackle kit from Dennis Carpenter to complete the job.

http://www.posiesrodsandcustoms.com/...-installation/

this link tells you all you need to know.

It lowered my truck about 1 1/2", my old springs were pretty tired. Probably a full 3" from factory height. I like the look, but the ride is so. much. better.!

IMG_2621.jpg here's my truck with the springs. Was 17.5" inches from the ground to the top of the front bumper, now it's just under 16"
