A big gear puller. And it takes a lot, comes off hard. Serious heat helps.

KR Wilson made a nice tool just for this. Some folks have fabricated their own similar versions of this tool. This link has one on page 7 of the 1936 KRW tool catalog.

A heavy 3 flat fingered puller works just fine.
Be glad you're not doing this with engine in vehicle.

As Patrick says. I have drilled and tapped that gear on my race engine, just in case.

I have an old Proto gear puller set, similar to the picture, I suspect it would work, but never tried it.

now that's a great idea

well if you look at the pic the top 3 cogs in the pic are rusty and pitted. I haven't tried polishing them yet to see how it will look after.

Beater, that's an original type of gear, steel, not cast iron, that's a good thing.

That is a good video. How was the old lower rope seal removed and the new one installed with the crank in place? Can they just be pushed into position? I recall them having some "crush" when I reassembled the motor ~10 years ago.

I would replace that aluminum hub centered Cloyes timing gear as if the fiber gear is not loose now it will be.
Also as posted above by someone do NOT put heat on your crank gear unless you want to do you babbit as well.
Bad advise from some posting so beware.
As was noted the Kr wilson puller for replacing the heat when the crank is in is the best . Also the 6306 installer makes it a piece of cake to install .
Experience, the right tool for the job, and being careful is key.
If the crank is out you can use a common puller with the crank nut used as your center.

Also , remove you valve cover and clean out the valve chamber and check rod and mains for integrity and clearance including end thrust.
Otherwise you may be wasting time and money .....
