Default AF700441 is this a big bore engine?

Hi,
In 2 days I want to buy an A. Now I have seen the engine number above.
I have read, that this numbers were transfered to Manchester in Dez 1928 and they produced small bore engines. Is this true?

The number is
AF*700441*

Thank for some fast answers.

Willi

From fordgarage.com;

An 'F' in the prefix of a British-built engine indicates the small bore engine, not whether it was for a RHD or LHD chassis. Large bore British-built engines did not carry the 'F' in the engine number prefix, nor did RHD English-produced chassis. The 'AF' in the engine number and in the vehicle Model name indicated only that the British-produced vehicle had a small bore 14.9 HP (R.A.C.) engine.

There were pictures I saw recently about the differences between the small and big bore engines but I haven't been able to find the post here yet. Definitely sounds like you have the small bore engine though.

I had a friend in England, now deceased, and he bought a 1928 Phaeton new in early 1928. I not only have seen this car but have driven it. The car had the small bore engine and on local highways had sufficient power, but probably not for a high speed highway. I cannot give you any data on the engine numbering. I believe the small bore was for highway tax reasons in England. I am having computer problems and can send responses but cn not send.

The AF 3" bore engine block was cast at Fords Cork Ireland tractor plant where they had a foundry which Manchester did not . Final machining and assembly was done at the Manchester plant . The small bore engine was available in France and Japan and most likely in other countries who had a "horsepower tax" Vehicles fitted with the AF engine had a chassis number starting AF same as an A would with the engine number . The "F" indicates "Foreign" and RHD parts also carry an "AF" prefix . Late English built AA trucks have some parts that were only fitted in England and nowhere else these have AAE prefixes indicating England . Confusion has arisen as some English built AA trucks are described in period Ford adverts etc etc as AAF this did not mean they were fitted with the small bore engine it just meant they were not identical to a USA built AA truck as they were RHD . The small bore engine produced 28 BHP @ 2600 RPM . They were hard pressed to pull a Briggs Fordor with 5 passengers let alone pull an AA truck .

John in windy spring weather rain and more gales on the way Suffolk Couney England .

PS my 28 phaeton has the AF engine wich is way smoother than the A engine . It is fine in flat country but you can sure tell the difference on hills . Gas mileage is just the same .

I have seen an AF stamped large bore engine, that originated from Argentina.

I believe that is correct. Ford US stamped some of the blocks for the RHD & LHD cars sent to Sth America with AF & also the Ford script. This had something to do with export requirements in the US.

Also, Ford Canada also could provide the small bore engine but I do not yet know whether they cast their own or used the Cork engines for S.B.
Canada export records show SB cars sent to Singapore & the odd East African country. It was only a small amount of vehicles, so I would guess they used the Cork engine.
Cheers Tom in NZ.

Thanks for your help !

I will not buy it, because the small bore would not be funny in our mountains.

Is the AF number stamped into the engine Block or just listed on the Paperwork?
A lot of times these engines have been changed over the years. sometimes the paperwork is not up to date

The best way to find out what you have there is to look at the cylinder casting outline on the water outlet side , If there is a flat spot between number 2 and 3 cylinder outline of 2 inches or so that is the Small Bore engine. In that spot on the Big Bore engine you can just barely get your fingers in the space

The Small Bore engine was available in many European Countries including France and Holland. They also made a Model B version with a BF number it had a hotter cam and a lighter flywheel

Wise Decision! The "Mountains" of Pennsylvania are just bumps in the road when compared to the Alps. My A coupe with a bored out engine, High Compression head, B carburetor, bored out manifold and 3.54 rear makes it over them pretty good, but I wouldn't want any less Horse power.
