Default Another Vote For Classic Instead of Regular Insurance

This poor fellow had a very nice classic car that took a serious, but probably not fatal, hit.

According to the rundown, his regular carrier (same as my regular carrier) totaled the car, whereas we hear many stories of the classic carriers going waaay beyond expectations to re-restore covered cars.

Caveat Emptor!

Gee, what a shame. That looks to be restorable, but without insurance footing the bill it wouldn't be "cheap". Beautiful car, for sure.

USAA indicated that they did NOT insure collector vehicles for “stated” value when I requested coverage from them on our policy. They referred me to a company that specialized in collector car coverage which did. Sounds like a definite failure to communicate on the part of the owner.

I had State Farm insuring my collectables for years but when they reached a certain value they asked me to find a classic car insurer. I went to Grundy.

Folks don't waste your time & checkout Grundy. I've had several collector car insurance companies & Grundy has been the best that I have dealt with. I have had a few claims as This car has been around the USofA & Canada. The paint alone was close to$10,000.

Grundy really came through when I had earthquake damage to my two '40s.

Had Grundy when my roadster (my avatar) was rear ended. Worked with me and the repair shop, coming out twice to access further damage that was not noticed the first time around .... they actually send me the money in three separate checks, paying for the repairs as we went along.

I've talked to both of them seems like every time I go to the GNRS and it's the same thing, they won't cover my cars as daily drivers. I don't like the fact I can't use it to go to the hardware store or if I do then I have to lie if there's an issue in the parking lot. The cost is cheaper but there's too many rules for me.....so it regular insurance and agreed value for me.

I don't think a trip to the hardware store constitutes a daily driver. I don't have Grundy, but I asked my present insurer if I could run an errand on a nice day in my old car and the answer was "yes". I would consider a daily driver as one driven as a modern car, in all kinds of conditions and most every day.

ditto with Hagerty. "daily" is the key word. Milage, they "suggest" not over 3500 miles but it is not written in stone. Long trips, no problem but they suggested that I contact them too let them know when and how far. Have collected 3 times and they are quick. the last time it was almost $10000 in damage from a deer and had a check in about 10 days. some things they missed so sent pics and got an extra $2000.

1oldtimer Somebody correct me if I am wrong but I think you want agreed value as compared to stated value.

"Stated Value" never made any sense to me.

How about I pick up a $500 beater with a heater, insure it for say, oh $85,000, and then have my brother in law steal it and set it on fire. Collect the payout, Rinse, lather, repeat. Now of course that won't work. Insurance companies don't work that way. Get it appraised; and in writing, agreed upon. Otherwise they could in theory, claim it wasn't worth what you said it was.

If this was the "H.A.M.B.", we would have had at least five "that'll buff out" posts by now!

Grundy covered the complete cost of repair of the damage in my avatar. With no problems.

You are correct and I meant agreed value.....it also helps if you have a current appraisal for backing.

Also, the daily driving is me not owning a vehicle newer the 1964. But, they did say no driving to work, grocery store or Home Depot (or any of the like).

I have a beater 32. It is all Henry, but it is not in good shape. Paying a classic rate seems dear. Can anyone suggest an outfit that will insure liability if I smack the other guy and let me worry about repairs to my old duck?
