Default 42- 2dr sedan chassis

Hi all my first post, I have a 42 2-dr I imported from Tennessee a few years ago and NZ compliance requires proof way chassis was built before can put on road it is a stock standard chassis with what looks like the center x-member is a welded box where the four inner legs mate to it, it is not the raised type but more the 41 pancake type, I have a copy of Van-Pelts 42 chassis showing what looks like vert lines where mine has welding both butt and angle, read that this chassis due to war was only built for short time before they bought out the 46 type, anyone have documents or closeup photo as sure seen a photo once that looked like it had the welds as well, cheers

Hi v8coopman,will be a couple of weeks before can get photo as I live winters in Australia and cars in NZ, when I'm going back to NZ was hoping to get it finally passed but as only had 20 working days before having to pay another $450 for compliance trying to get the proof of another 42 chassis built the same way first, cheers Bob

Interesting, but not sure I am totally understanding this. How would the authorities have any idea how the frame was built? Wouldn't the serial number stamped into the frame be the deciding factor?

Hi Jseery all cars now imported into NZ must have a compliance check and any that may have rust or signs of any damage or fresh paint none of which mine shows except for drip rail repair on roof done when ? who knows may have been 40 yrs ago must then have a certifying repair engineer inspect and his charge another $350 and has to go up on a hoist wherever I can get access so he can walk under it so he can decide if acceptable or not and any further repairs or reinstatement to original specs and u only are given 20 working days to comply or a recharge of full amount in my case $460 cheers, Bob Ford

sorry should have explained better the person inspecting who only really is inspecting the numerous numbers of Jap import cars imported to NZ now has a old car to inspect and sees welding on chassis so he passes it on to another to decide

Hi Marvin it came from Ron Watson in Athens I have seen pictures of some with the rivet's but the four legs or extensions where they meet the x in the center on mine have both vertical and angle butt weld's not one piece like early or later ones which run full length but with a curve

Hi Bob,

If this is what you are talking about then it is the same as the chassis under my Sedan Delivery? I can photograph that tonight and send you a picture of it tomorrow if that will help?

Hi Jseery, thanks for posting yes but pic no seven shows a even closer look at center showing the welding and of cause no MiG welding then, seems that's part of the proof I need now just need to convince the certifier, maybe only a few built this way was starting to think mine may have been a prototype, going to NZ next week ,cheers, Bob

Great shot sir I apricate the help in showing pic, myself at 73yrs young couldn't figure out how too, seems the butt welding caused the inspector to comment they believe mine may have been cut in half, wonder if there are many more built that way as later ones seem to have a riveted top on ,again thanks

I don't know what years, but in the 42-48 years some center sections of frames were riveted in and some welded. I have seen both. Mine is riveted (48). May have depended on where the frames were built??
