Default differential woes

ok got the pinion gear in and "adjusted" put the blue stuff on the ring gear and put that and the empty carrier ass'y in and turned the drive shaft to see how the gears mesh and when turning the drive shaft by hand noticed a clunk (no oil in case but did oil bearings). is this normal?
thanks again

No no. No clunk. That's a tough job. It ate us up last yr. Get some help. A ring and pinion shop would be glad to help you.

If the axle hubs aren't installed, the axle will move back and forth in the axle tube, but I can't imagine that would make a clunk.

Might want to read or re-read Tom Endys rear end rebuild notes .

just got back to this problem, but it seems like when i turn the drive shaft be hand and the gears mesh and actually touch they would have to click in an empty (no oil) housing. i got one shim behind each bearing and just one gasket (thin) on either side. if i used more gaskets the teeth would be farther apart and would click worse. if i used more shims behind the bearings that would push the ring gear in closer to the pinion gear wouldn't it?
if i pulled the carrier bearings off to put more shims in would i ruin the bearings by taking them off?

What "pattern" are you showing with the blue dye now?? One gasket on each side leads me to think you've not got it "set" right...........

A clunk for each tooth engagement on the pinion or one clunk during one complete pinion revolution or one clunk or more for each revolution of the carrier and ring gear.
forget the blueing for now. You have preload on the carrier without pinion to figure out. Were the shims for the carrier brgs.? Its a long process, each step in order.

Those gaskets are shims and all different thickness. It is a long process. Go find a ring and pinion shop.

Not sure where you are putting the bearing shims but you have to pre- load the axle bearings without the axles. The bearing shims go under the cone cups not the cone if needed but first you have to determine the pre load. The post above on Santaanis is the best place for this procedure there are no shortcuts
