Default 55 or 56 Ford y block ID ?

Did 56 Ford Y-blocks 272/292 originally have the frost plugs on the front of the heads ?
I thought that was an indicator of a 55 272 y-block.

Core plugs in Y-block heads began in '54 and were discontinued sometime in the first part of the '56 model year.
The chart at this link doesn't indicate which heads had them and which didn't, but will help you ID them otherwise...

Photo 2 - a '56 ECZ-C head, without core plugs. I'll assume heads alphabetically earlier would have had them, but I don't know where the break is.

Here's a link to an engine block casting number chart because, the same heads were used on different displacement engines...

My 56 with a build date of 10/21/55, according to the patent plate, has the freeze plugs. It has the original 292.

That's a pretty early one. Do you know the casting number on the heads?

ted eaton is thinking early in 56.doesnt know if dif and cf heads changed at the same time.you would think with all the 56s out there with original motors it would be easy to narrow it down.

steve fritz, The casting number on the heads should have a three letter prefix with the first two letters being: EC_

from this link... http://ford-y-block.com/cylinderheadchart.htm
