The engines for these were fitted with a special heads. These ones burn wood but there were also coal burners.

Has anyone see a "LOWER" compression head for the Model A Ford stateside?

And when he says "low" he may be meaning a "standard" head rather than the Model B head which others have said were fitted to most GAZ trucks?

I double checked. What I wrote above that these trucks had lower compression heads was wrong (I've removed what I wrote above to avoid confusion). They in fact had higher compression heads of 6.2

There are different numbers out there but the wood burner GAZ-42 was rated around 34hp/2400rpm. And it received lower gearing of 7.5

The GAZ-AA story is complex. When B engines (called "M" engines in Russian) were introduced A engines continued to being made and fitted to trucks. WW2 era A engines exist. The GAZ-AAA and armored cars were 1st in line for B engines. There were also "AAZ" engines that were A blocks fitted with hi-comp heads. There were also been hi-comp heads for B engines.

My guess is these wood burners would have received B engines with the hi-comp heads mentioned above; but anything is possible especially during WW2.
