Default 1940 Ford Wiper Towers Closed versus Open Car

I have one of each of these that are NOS but I don't remember if the wider of the two is the open car or closed car. Can anyone tell me which is which? One is marked 40 L and the other 40 R.

If the open ones remarked 39 what would the narrow one marked 40 be for???? I wish it was for 41open as I am working one at the moment and sure could use one.

I wish I could tell you. I've never seen a narrow one marked 40. '41? Perhaps. There has to be a '41 expert out there....

The shape of the 40 casting where it sits on the sheet metal of the cowl is different between the open and closed car towers also and uses a different gasket.
