Default Old door seal removal

On my '38 car, the door hinge seals have turned into a gooey tar-like mess sticking to the door. Part of the seal has hardened, too. What to use to remove the mess without damaging the paint? I've tried lacquer thinner and it doesn't seem to stay on the vertical surface long enough to help.
