Default 34 Gas Tank Drain plug

Hi,,what exactly does the 34 gas tank drain plug consist of? Is it a pipe thread plug,,1/4" ×18 with slightly taped threads? Or, is it a type of bolt/bung hex head using a copper crush washer? The last thing I want to do, is damage the tank threads. Anyone? Thank You!

Whatever you do, don't use a blue wrench around that plug.

Yes it is a pipe thread. Use a dab of this sealer and don't over tighten. Most hardware stores have it. I bought some at Auto Zone.

Like Lawson said, no heat as the threaded boss in riveted on, and soldered to seal. heat, and solder runs out onto floor. dont ask how I know that !

Most gas tank "drain plugs" were installed before the tanks were coated with "tern", a
solder-like metal, making plug removal likely to damage the tank. Old cars will usually develop pin hole leaks in the top. where they can't be seen, caused by the layer of road grime that builds out of sight. That was the problem with my '47, and putting in a plastic tank was a really good idea.

I've tried several different methods (but never used heat) to remove gas tank drain plugs on various early Ford's, and have never been successful. I usually wind up completely removing the tank, and use the openings for the neck and/or the opening(s) on the top of tank for draining, cleaning, or flushing tank. Or if the tank is found to have serious issues, I replace the tank with a good used or new reproduction.

Agree with JM35, or if the tank is out and you have some skill with a drill you can drill it to the bare minimum of plug left , and remove the last bits with a pick. Then I replace it with a hex head plug so you can get it out next time
